    Deadlines

Can someone please explain to me the reason registration for races close a week to a week and a half before the event?

I understand that heat sheets need to be printed, I suppose all that time is needed because we still use woodblock printing? I print papers several times a week and I can do it in about 50 seconds. Are these things being mailed by the Pony Express or something?

My next best guess is to give other racers enough notice on whether a class makes it or not. If only 4 guys register then I can understand them not wanting to show up to the lake just to be told they can't run.

But if a class has already met the 5 boat min what harm is there in allowing registration up to the night before the race, even the morning of? No reason a pen can't be used.

So can someone with more NAMBA exp. then myself tell me why racers are sent to the curb instead of the oval when they miss a bogus deadline by a day or two?

It is usually about trophies. Trophy shops often need a week minimum to be sure to deliver on time, some need more. Since entry fees cover the trophies the club has to know the trophy costs are covered before they order. If a class only has three entries they may decide to only trophy first place. Clubs use races to raise funds, no point to it if they lose money on trophies. Other related costs like food or portapottys can also depend on the number of racers.

That at said, I fail to see why someone who wants to race can't meet the club's deadline. A lot of folks
give up their time and racing program to put on an event. Leaving the club hanging until the last minute hardly seems fair....

That sheds some more light on it Fluid, thanks. I'm still relatively new to the racing scene. The ones I have been going to allow you to sign up the morning of the event, or our club president will even take care of it sometimes so I guess it isn't very often I need to go on rc events and register. In other forms of racing I had always registered the morning of the event.

I agree there is no reason I cant register before the cut off date, I just thought that 2 days after the posted deadline and 4 days before the event would have still been plenty of time to register a racer in a class that is going to barely meet the min # of boats if it meets it at all. My trophy is the comradrie shared with other FE Racers not a silly little plaque for my tool box. Our facility has public restrooms available year around so that's a moot point. Lunch is sold separate and is available for purchase the morning of the event so no relevance there either.

I also agree that there is no point in losing money on trophies, that being said I've only ever seen ribbons awarded by this outfit.

So the cliche hold true, live and learn. Ill register before the deadline next race and I'll walk with my head down, holding an electric boat under my arm.

If you're talking about the Nats get in touch with fred (fas here on OSE) and I'm sure he'll accomodate, also something like the nats is a big production, guys camping for a week or more, tent space, people traveling from all over the country, food is not readily accessible, (we are 15 minutes from the nearsest civilization) T shirts, goodie bags, door prizes etc this stuff all needs to be sorted out, it may seem that you might be getting shut out but if everyone (or even 8-10 guys) decided to sign up the last week the club would be going crazy to scramble to get stuff done. Also if it's a local race, get in touch with the CD, their email or ph # is usually available on the race flyer or on the details section of rcracingevents and call them, most clubs would be happy to get a late entry.
