At the end of last summer, i was unlucky enough to steer Miss Geico into rocks cracking the hull and twisting up rudder assembly. Pulled out the motor (1500 kv) and esc and installed them in another boat. Rebuilt Miss Geico and purchased Proboat 80 amp esc and 1800 kv motor. installed two Nanotech 5000 mah 35-70c 3c batteries. I kind of knew this would be a mistake and it was. First run seemed to go ok (3 min). Second time out boat went about 200 feet and dead in the water with smoke billowing out of hull. Luckily got to it in time to save boat. Esc is fryed. So im left with the motor and batteries. Given what I have left, any recommedations regarding new esc. Or should i go for a new motor and esc given the batteries I have. Or should I consider new batteries. I am running a Octura x642 prop and looking for better top end than the stock Miss Geico.
Proboat esc up in smoke

Go with a Sea King 180 esc instead of the factory 80 amp unit. There simply is not enough head room on 6s while running an 1800 kv motor and swinging a X 642 prop. BTW, an X642 is a pretty serious prop for a 29" hull with an 1800 kv motor. That's an overall pitch of roughly 2.60. An X440 or X442 might be a better choice.
I too burned up my 80 amp BJ29 esc, but did so swinging a cupped S215 prop with a Leopard 3650 motor rated at 1650 kv. It made it about 2.5 minutes before releasing the magic smoke.Last edited by champion221elite; 06-09-2014, 09:04 AM.Comment

Will the size of the wires on the motor being different from the batteries and esc be a problem. I believe the the connections on the motor are 3.5 mm bullets on 12 gauge wire. I have ec5's on the batteries now, should I consider going to larger bullet connectors all around. I would hate to kill the motor based on the battery setup since I have read these parts seem to suffer a quick demise on 6's.Comment

On my initial run with the 80 amp esc, 1800 kv motor and x642 prop, not even pushing it to hard it seemed very fast with extreme amount of low end. The boat was squirrely given the amount of torque so had to be careful how much throttle to give.Comment

Try shifting the weight around in the boat this will help with the bounce , test test and more test .....good to here your happy with them props :)Comment
