    Have you ever done something............

Have you ever done something knowing full well it was just going to come back and bite you in the ass?

I sold a customer a etti 220 after knowing he was going to use it in a 40 plus inch long cat with tp4060 1400kv motor and 10s lipo. I explained over and over that it wasnt a setup for a new rc boater. I told him it wouldnt be good, but he said another boat dealer said he would guarantee the setup is solid and wouldn't be a problem. The only good part of this story is the customer never got to run the boat at full speed. the esc cogged and wouldn't run. I explained that it was probably a cold solder joint. He said the Hobby shop that did the soldering for him spent 3 hours and went over it. It was 100%. I told him to bring it back to check out.

After removing the shrink wrap off the motor to esc connectors and giant ball of electrical tape from the battery connectors. I think I know why its cogging.

Please check the pictures and tell me if you see any issues.

Holy crap. Looks like it was put together with a curling iron instead of a soldering iron. What a mess.

Did any power make it past the birds nest?

      That's just laughable.

        I don't see an issue

You should sent the pics to the Hobby Shop that did that and tell them to never touch a soldering iron again.

thats not really soldering its more like "make it all stick together without having to hold it."

I hope he isn't expecting any type of warranty on the esc. That job wouldn't pass current on the smallest lipo/brushless setup and is a big huge fail is every aspect of soldering and electrical knowledge in general. The entire approach is a massive botch job. Even if you fix the wiring and solder it properly the chances of the owner setting up the boat properly to survive at 10s seems highly unlikely. What are you supposed to do with that mess? Send the customer back to whoever approved and recommended the setup and wash your hands of the mess

What size wire and bullets, they look awfully small. I thought larger connectors (I would use 8mm) at least 6.5mm would be the minimum!

I think someone would have to purposely try to solder that bad. No way someone tried to do it correctly and end up with that. He used one of those $5, 15 watt solder pencils I presume. Instead of washing your hands of them, I'd solder it correctly and guide him in the right direction as much as you can. Everyone has to start somewhere and someone shooing them away isn't what they need. Sometimes you gotta take a little extra time with some customers and that will seperate you from the rest. That will earn you a loyal, understand customer most of the time. That's how I try to do people.....I'm sure with your rep...you will too.

I hope you invited him to the forum, and also showed him an actual decent solder joint to compare to. I'm curious as to what prop they recommended for 50,000 rpm in a 40" cat, being from the area I'm also dying to know the hobby shop......maybe even a hint.....?
