Should I use a Cap Pack or not?

My Turnigy 180a ESC just arrived with caps hanging all over it. It has the three main ones and four small ones hanging ugly like off of small diameter wires.

Before this arrived, I was planning on a Castle Creations Cap Pack which I already possess. Now I'm having 2nd thoughts. This will be controlling a Turnigy T600 on 6s in my Super Hawaii boat.

What do you think? Is there such thing as too many caps?

    Thanks.20140604_111946.jpg

No point in adding more. You'll be fine. That motor on 6s, in a super Hawaii, though... Prob gonna be a bit much for that hull

That is a powerful motor. I used to run 4s2p in a vintage mrc fountain 42" boat with the t600 motor with seaking 180 and x447 prop.

this was more than enough, that motor is a 1400kv right? If so I would not go over 4s personally, 5s max for a few runs. You can never have a boat that is too efficient but you can have a boat that is too fast and reckless looking on the water.

You really want the ZLH caps if you plan and building your own cap bank.

In the box that the ESC came in there should be a bit of double sided tape. I simply fix the remote cap bank hanging on the wires to the main caps with that.

This is the ZLH series specs. why would the ZLH series be better? Is it because the esc is already using the ZLH series? or are the values better?

I think adding the castle cap bank is a good idea. Read Dr. Waynes post on cap banks in the tips, trick and instructional area. The small cap bank added on the t-180 doesn't accomplish much. Read through the article as much of it if focused on the t-180 and I think you'll find adding the castle cap bank a good idea and cheap insurance at that.

Even though there are already 7 caps on the ESC? 3 large ones on the PCB and 4 smaller ones shrink wrapped on a seperate wire..

                      Yep.
I've put 3 of the larger caps on a couple of SK180s that I run on 6s. As well as the smaller pack that was already on it. But I also put an anti spark connector on them too.

Low esr capacitors draw masssive amounts of energy on recharge
When there are a large number, the recharge can create a nanosecond EXTREME energy draw ... fortunately the wire between battery and cap may act as a buffer and reduce shock to the battery... it's why some cables get hot in stressed setups.
Higher capacity / more caps increases this risk of battery failure due continuous peak/excess discharge.

Too many caps can have an adverse affect on performance and longevity of components.

Id not exceed 3300uf for 25C5000(125A cont).. or 6400uf for 45C5000(225A cont ) for a high draw setup
shorter battery cables is better than a big bank of caps to compensate.

use voltage rated caps at least 30% higher than your batts.
eg 35V for 6S ... 63V for 12S.. allows head room for spikes.

                              regs
                              Wayne ...
