Acetone won't work, we call it lacquer but it hasn't been lacquer for a long time, it's some kind of urethane.
Getting hard to find real lacquer covered magnet wire for re-winding vintage guitar pickups. The new stuff just doesn't sound the same. Thicker insulation means a fatter wind with the same number of turns.
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

LOL I know a lot about a couple of things and nothing about everything else! Get beyond bricks, music and RC stuff and I'm lost.

Try to put them in Nitromethane, it will desolve most of the epoxi, urethane, lacquer or whatever :).

Well, I sanded all the lacquer off all the wiring. So now each wire is a nice silver colour rather than a reddish brown. Still no dice though. Molten solder still gets repelled like water on wax. Even though the wiring appears stripped of the lacquer, I'm still seeing the wiring develop a black soot-like coating when I apply the heat from the soldering Iron. Using solder with flux core. I also tried cleaning with acetone, bakers Soldering fluid, hydrochloric acid (nasty)...... All no dice. What the heck is going on?

I can't answer why it is still not working, but the fact that you see black soot like substance means the lacquer is being heated , when a motor burns, you can see this symptom. Is it possible, and suppose you have indeed physically removed all that stuff, I wonder, that the high temperature of the tip is over heating the lacquer that it is melting down towards the area you want to tin, by the time you see black soot, it is too late. Turn the motor around and point the wires up while you tin?
I am just thinking out loud, could be entirely wrong, please forgive me in advance!

Just one question: if you file a bit one of the ends is it still silver color? This would mean the end wire is aluminum, not copper. It would be quite strange, but this would explain the black soot and the non stick...

Solved! I think.... CornelP had the answer. As soon as I read his post I knew what had happened. I used a piece of aluminium plate to protect the kitchen table I was working on without thinking about it. That is, place the wiring directly on the aluminium, and get to work with the wire wheel. What must have happened is that the wire wheel has gotten off all the lacquer OK...... but put a coating of aluminium *on*.... or enough aluminium to stuff up the soldering process. I've just done a test where I fitted a new wire wheel, and scraped off the lacquer on a wood block instead. Did that to three strands and..... presto...... the solder stuck. Might just keep my sanity intact - put this motor on the shelf - and sheepishly order another one. Sign me up for new guy of the friggin week.........
