To use the liner or not?

    Hi everyone!

I am in a disccusion with another member about perhaps using or not using the included liner that came with my Impulse 31 V2 boat. While he is very helpful.. I wanted to reach out and get some general feedback on this topic, as I want to truly ensure that the boat will be safe, and reliable for a long time.. as well to simply hear others thoughts.. as I am new to boats.

Here are my options that I have been thinking.

    a. Use the upgraded flex cable from OSE (0.150) in place of the stock cable, BUT also use the liner as I would need to with the stock size cable.

    or..

    b. Use the "upgraded" HD cable OSE offers, that is larger at (0.187) and requires NO liner to be used.

I am seeking general info on weather or not excessive wear and tear will happen without the liner in place, and if there are any other issues (like more water intrusion) by not using the liner on this boat / other boats / general etc.

I read this article today.. and it scared me about not using the liner.. so, I wanted to ask first about all of this, as OSE sells the HD cable, and can not be used with the liner etc.. again, this is all new to me.. here was the article I read... http://whobbiesboattalk.ning.com/for...-stuffing-tube and to save time.. here was the part that I did not like reading:

If you are a sport model boater and do not want to replace cables and shaft tubes frequently, as well as taking the chance for a potential disaster with a shaft wearing through both the tube and then the hull, then I strongly recommend that liners as well as 3/8" steel shaft tubes are used.
The other thing I don't care for on this boat, is that I need to remove the motor each time I need to clean the stock liner. (which lets face it, in saltwater that I will be running will be every time). So.... that was the real motivator for me to consider the change to the bigger cable vs. any performance I may get from it.

Also, I will NOT be running 6S.. I should be happy enough with 4S performance.. and I already have a ton of 4S packs.

    Thanks so much guys!!

IMO .187 No liner, none of my boats (16 now) have liners. I pull the shafts after every outing and regrease, also gives me a chance to check the shaft over. I've never had a failure related to not running a liner, just use a quality waterproof/resistant grease and you'll be fine. Also in high RPM setups I've heard of liners melting and siezeing to the shaft, no liner One less thing to go wrong with your boat. You talk to most of the guys that have been doing this for a lot of years and they will tell you they've never seen a shaft wear through a stuff tube..

I haven't used one in 2 seasons, no issues whatsoever. Not sure if they fit in a teflon, but these are perfect for a quick clean of the tube....http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...-tube-cleaners

OP has them, I could not for sure tell him what exactly is the size of the stuffing tube that PB uses, I use .187 with 1/4" tube and there is no issue, since I wasn't 100% sure on the PB tube, OP is asking and I would like to tag along to learn as well.
Too many boats, not enough time...

OP has what? The link I posted was to a thread I made a while back about using pipe cleaners from the craft store to clean stuffing tubes......
Regaurding the PB tube, I'mm 99% sure it's 1/4", but when I had an Impulse, I pulled the liner and used the upgrade .187 flex OSE sells already cut for that boat, beat the snot out of it on 4s and 6s, the hull split before anything else let go. You are safe.

Sorry, apologies for jumping the gun on both of you! OP has the pipe cleaners, he posted in the other thread. I use them as well, works great!

You guys are the best! I can tell this is a very great forum, and community! Does anyone here live near South FL? I would love to meet up one day for some boating now that I have one worth taking out!

This was funny. Okay, so looks like using the upgraded OSE cable .187 and no liner it is then. I am not even going to bother running it stock, as I am still waiting on some other parts to come.. and I just want to set it up this way from the start.

As long as no water gets in, (or no more then what the liner would have been).. I will be happy.

HA! I was born in Bradenton! I live in Miami, and my mother lives in Sarasota. I will have to touch base, and plan a trip over!

FYI, I glanced at your other thread, if nobody pointed it out, that extra tube that came seperate in the package is supposed to go over the threaded rod for the battery hold down, it just cushions the batteries from the threads wearing into the sides. Not sure if I had to trim it or not though, depends on the size of the packs.

I haven't tried this myself yet, but I've read where some RC boaters cut a piece of water tubing and overlap the flex shaft and stuffing tube where the shaft exits the stuffing tube to help prevent the intrusion of water into the hull. This sacrificial piece would be replaced as needed. Sorry I can't apply my personal experience to this (yet) but may be worth a try if you find that water pumps up the shaft.
                        This is NOT a toy?!?

This was a mod I did for my Atomic Barbwire. It did help.. and this boat is no where near as nice as the Impulse 31 of course.. so, hopefully I am in good luck with it!

I've run both. IMHO, the liner is not needed, but it is useful for "stepping down" to accept a smaller flex. I like to use 1/4" stuffing tube, then if I want to run a .150 cable I use a liner, if I want to run a .187 cable I ditch the liner.
