    Battery tray how to

    Hi guys :,

I was pondering picking up some carbon fibre or fiberglass battery trays for my mean mahine overhaul. I was also thinking about making some trays out of 1/4" lexan tthat I have on hand, but my step dad just got a load of cedar in from Plum Creek mill, so I opted for 3/16" cedar ply. It smells good, its really strong & it doesn't rot w/ water exposure.

we have quite a few new members trickling in so I thought I'd do a quick how to battery tray thread to help out . I started by cutting 3/16" cedar ply into 2 1/2" x 7" tray blanks w/ tabs to go under them. Then I ran to the local Homer Depot for a few supplies. Industrial Velcro, Velcro one wraps 6 x 12" x 3/4" & some Dap strong stick construction adhesive, for rock solid bonding.

I have a receiver tray and several battery trays sanded and ready to go, now I'm getting everything glued up. Here's an idea for you. 1/4" x 1/4" aluminum angle as edging ?...

Here are the trays glued up, trimmed to fit w/ the tab's beveled too, then drilled and painted. Ready to install.

The finished product. the trays are solidly anchored with construction adhesive, I ran a 1" strip of industrial Velcro down the center of the receiver and the battery trays, then added 1 one wrap to the reciever & 2 one wraps to each battery tray for reinforcement.

I hope this help somebody, G'night

The other option is plain old Velcro stuck to the hull...personally if you can get away with out them, I wouldn't install them. Extra weight and potential failure points.

        This is true Doby ,

however this option is also a double edged sword. It may be lighter I agree. My UL-1 only has industrial velcro In it. In the mean machine that won't work because its a stepped hull. Also, if the Velcro doesn't hold, the cells can break something, get punctured, or knock the hatch off and go overboard.

With the stepped hull, the trays make sense.
