If you do leave a small gap then it needs to be smaller than the end play on the motor, otherwise the thrust bearing isn't doing anything & the motor bearing will still be taking the load. Personally I leave just a few thou clearance.

I use a piece of paper between the collet and thrust bearing to get a little end play before tightening everything up.

I generally do not use thrust bearings. True, I generally use high-quality motors, but even most Limited motors have decent bearings designed to handle axial loads just fine. One problem is that many of the "thrust bearings" sold for boats are not designed for high rpm use. Too, they are also more prone to rusting or foreign material damage which will increase drag considerably. But if you want to use one, make sure to follow the suggestions posted above or the bearing will be either useless or will actually reduce motor performance.

BOCA sells stainless thrust bearings if you want them.

I use them on most everything. However, just last night I was inspecting my 1/8 scale and saw that my 8mm thrust bearing had disintegrated. Not sure if my gap was wrong or if as Jay suggested I simply exceeded the design parameters of the bearing. Annoying.
