been trying to figure out a way to get more water cooling in my boat, my question is how much drag do you think this setup will have on my boat? and will it pull to the left more? Any suggestions?
Thanks, Jeremy
That looks really low. You don't need the water pickups to be that deep in relation to the hull or three of em. Try to move it up so it's just barely peeking pas the hull if you were to look at the water pickup from the front of the boat, front to back. After you have moved them, watch the temps and compare to see if you are still getting the same cooling effect/temperatures and then see if your speeds are increasing. If it pulls to the left more you can always place one water pickup on each side to balance them out too.
I notice you have a third line behind the rudder? You shouldn't need three pickups?. . . . . . The one over the prop would/should be the only one you need, but if it makes a difference, move em all up and do some short run tests and see. Let us know what you find.
thanks for the input, going to make a one with two on each side as for three inputs the heat im getting off of the motor and esc are crazy hot even to the point of the esc thermole load shut of once and the motor lead has came un sodered from the heat, my only other idea was to switch to a smaller prop,
my setup so far is only a 6 cell pack with a 15 turn speed control with a 17 turn motor, with a home made wire drive setup. any other thoughts would be helpful?
thanks, Jeremy
It sounds like you are maxed out on the prop, or dragging too much, hard to tell. Try the water cooling change you said you would and go down a few props. Sounds like your sytem is pulling too many amps which is causing the ESC to over heat and the motor to heat up too. What kind of motor, ESC and battery are you using?
there just some older stuff out of a car that i water cooled the esc [tazer 15] and a water jacket on a orion 17 turn 05 motor, hard to find boat stuff in the desert, not a lot of people into boats just big monster trucks.
never tested temps next time out i will[ last time out after a 5 min run the solder on the motor melted off], the drive system is new just put it in, yes its friction free, cooling the car speed control with some homemade setup threw the heat sinks, motor is being cooled by a cooling coil. also the batt. is so hot u will burn ur hand.
Get rid of those pickups man, they wont help any - out there they will just cause drag.
If you are melting solder then you are drawing way to many amps. Prop it down
Also the driveline - It doesnt put forward load onto the motor? some people leave too much gap between strut and drive dog and all the drive load goes onto the motor.
if you fill your mouth with water and blow it though the cooling system, it should flow through quite easy - Does it ?
thanks ditching the extra pickup right now, the water system flow nice even from a far at slow speed or at fast speed i could see it comeing out going to go down to a 30 mm prop.
To add, the drive system is very angled, it should be straighter at least from the pic. . . . . are you sure it's free?? Also it looks like you drilled a water line into a car ESC? That really won't ½ as as efficient IMO. You should really get a marine ESC. Just my opinion.
