Turn Fins. Rectangle or curved is there a difference in handling ??

My Smash Shark has rectangle turn fins and I just got a new set of rounded fins.
Is there a difference in the different styles of fins and if so is one suited to different conditions to the other?

    Any input is much appreciated.

    Cheers

Before I can provide an opinion, I need to know if you are referring to Hydroplane turn-fins, or Mono turn fins?

One clear way to figure out the answer to your question would be to simply look at what the boats are that are winning the races. Chances are, they have the "winning" shape.

      Thanks.

      I'm talking Mono Hull.

Most are using rounded turn fins. I'm trying a new set today.

      Cheers

From my experience, the squared ones work better. As an example... My IM31 design, which comes with the rounded ones, was fine in "stock" trim, and when is all alone on the course.

However, when you get it in race water, with a bit more power and speed, it would tend to barrel-roll in the rough water turns.

I put a set of squared ones on it as a test, and the boat is rock solid now.

Here are the replacement ones I designed, which Steven so wonderfully has reproduced and sells:

I find them to be a "night and day" difference...

          Thanks Darin for your input.

Those square fins look like mine on my Smash Shark. Funny I found out yesterday that the new bigger rounded fins helped a lot more like you said with the square ones on yours. My boat was so much more stable in the wash of others and through the corners. I guess it depends on many other aspects of the hull design and tuning.

          Once again thanks.
