Is there a correct way to fit a water jacket?

    Hi All

I have had a problem with a water jacket leaking on a 36mm can, So I brought a new water jacket from OSE and was wondering if there is a right way and a wrong way of installing the new one? example: oil, dish soap etc.

    Cheers

I use bearing oil so that the o ring isn't torn

Thanks for your reply I have read a lot of people use grease.

First, the nibbles are wrong. Water should enter at the bottom and exit at the top. Reason is the motor will get full cooling instead of partial cooling. The aluminum coils cooled the whole motor but were inefficient for the time period ( era ). I'll probably catch H*** for this but surprised no vendor has picked up on it!!!!! When putting rings in place, TAKE YOUR TIME and make sure the rings don't twist or curl as they won't seal. Not knocking Steve at all but pointing out facts.-- Soap works fine and I use Conformal Coating over rings after all is in place and let dry a few hours.

You need to use some form of lubricant to ease the sliding of the rings, preventing tearing. Oil is usually better than grease since it is more likely not to be wiped off the ring as it is slid on. Use a twisting action to make the install easier.

As far as the nipple orientation, for maximum cooling water should enter the jacket low and exit high as in the photo below. This insures that there is not an air pocket on the top of the motor. The type the OP shows works well but is not as efficient as the type below. Sometimes there simply isn't room for the larger jackets with the inlet on the bottom, in that case the OP's type works fine in cramped installations.

OSE sells a LOT of this type of jacket.

Twisting action to get rings on but make sure there is no twist after rings are on. I should have mentioned this above but figured the op knew they should know this anyhow. My last post.

I always use dish soap and a slight twisting motion. the first time you run water through it rinses the soap out and sets the can.

A few thoughts/tips on water jackets ( might be more info than asked for but am idling in neutral waiting for parts so )

The accessibly priced AQ gold jackets* that conveniently give many input/output choices can be a real pain if (as I recently discovered) the AQ motor endbells are almost invisibly larger in diameter than the can. A few passes on the sander {technically a NAMBA no-no but whatever} and a once impossible fit (regardless of the amount of obscenities uttered) became an easy slide-on :

They also can be configured to neatly re-aim the waterline orientation by swapping out the fittings :

                DSC05283.JPG

                * I've found that the older gold jackets leaked out of the 6 unused block-off plugs and they need to be removed, coated with sealant and screwed back in. Later ones are sealed better.

Also, as stated here, the correct location of the inputs/outputs is important. On the HRC-style jackets it's an easy mod to drill and re-tap an entry or exit and plug the unused hole with a threaded and trimmed bolt of the correct thread size ) to accomplish this. I'll often seal this mod with some JB Quick (no picture of this relocation handy, but just as an example of the JB seal) :

                DSC05285.JPG

When installed to your liking, a simple test goodie like this can be plugged into the waterline input and the integrity of all the joints can be tested [note: depending on the direction of the outlet flow , it may be adviseable to wear a wetsuit while performing this operation]

                DSC05287.JPG

After all is said and done, I've sometimes had to resort to sealing the circumference of the jacket/motor can join point with silicone. A little practice and this can be accomplished with reasonable neatness

Here's some watercooling installation goodies that will come in handy. I like WD40 as the slide-on lube :

One last thing and I'll STFU : Remember that no amount of watercooling is a panacea for an over-ambitious setup.
