    380 series Feigao observations

so I got my 12l friday and opened the box...1st thought was awww so cute. well while measuring it I've found that its about 1mm smaller in dia. than a speed 480. also after winding a coolining coil, I've still got the touch. a piece of 3/4" sch 40 pvc pipe makes a nice form to wind the coil on (approx 28" of 5/32" Al tubing). pic shows the almost complete coil(still need to trim the excess off).
    mounting screws:
do not assume that both screws are the same length! measure both before attempting to install the motor!

how far you can let the screws into the motor before they start to damage the motor ?

on mine(380 12L) it looks to be 3/16"...however I would advise that one check 1st as this depth varies w/ the number of turns. I clipped the pointy end off a toothpick and gently inserted it untill it bottomed out, then marked the toothpick...being paraniod I checked both holes(turned out to be the same depth) then subtracted a smidge just to be safe.

Rex I have a 380 cooling jacket I no longer need. I bought a set and wrecked one improperly tapping the fitting holes. The remaining one is yours if you want it. Once I unpack the shop I will sent it out to ya.

I'll keep you in mind if the coil isn't enough . seriously the motor is not going into a race boat. think more along the lines of reef racer I'm shooting for 10-15mph on 7.2v and initial prop is a 427.

its going into my 'monokote wonder' :-)
if I seem a bit disjointed...it was one of THOSE days at the pond. long about the time the tree took out the powerlines I figured maybe I ought to pack up and give serious thought to going home.

18" long iirc 8.5" beam & heavy as all get out(approx 3lbs w/ batt.s). what can I say...its my 1st rc boat... if I were to build another it would be lighter, it would also have a flex shaft so I could use a proper size motor. as is a 380 size can (dia) is all that fits :-). course it can handle 6-12" waves so I'm not in a big rush to make it uber fast.

heheh, well I've promoted starting small and working up...that said thought I'd start w/ an x427 and see if things stay cool for a change(the 380 reef racer motor got toasted and the speed480 was getting mighty warm). I have some larger props I can try if they do(430,431,432,531 etc.)

do you think the 380 8L wil handle 3 cell lipo ? i know that it say 8 cells. but i just happens to have a few 11.1 lipo`s laying around.

rpm wise it looks safe enough...thats bout all I can say. I would guess that unless it was running a gearbox, finding a small enough prop (for direct drive) might give you a challenge.

did a run yesterday with 8cells 4500 mah. and was suprised that the motor was not more then 93,4f after a 5 minute run on my micro drifter with a 28mm prop from hydro & marine (http://www.hydromarine.de/hm_11072.htm) have no idea what the pitch is on those. but i wil test the motor on 11,1 and se. might even try the 25mm they have it it gets hot.

                              further observations part 1

well after coping w/ a 'glue' failure(3 yr old), and using a shoehorn... I got the motor installed in the boat. pic shoing boat w/ both hatches open.
