    Replace BEC with?

    Hello gang,

I have started my first build. Since I will be runnung 6s I have decided not to use BEC.

What battery pack shold I get? I assume it will be a life pack of some kind.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks for your time,

You could use either LiFe or LiPo. The issue will be the servos, some are rated for up to 6 volts only, meaning they will be over-volted on lithium packs. Many modern servos are good for 7.4 volts, most current receivers can handle 7.4 volts. More volts means more torque from the servo. Capacity depends on the setup. Big digital servos draw a "lot" of current and need a higher capacity receiver pack. I run 1600 mAh 5-cell NiMH receiver packs in my 10S boats with big digital servos and they last for a full day of racing (five heats) with plenty left over.

Some old servos like the Futaba 9206 only run on 4.8 or they smoke. Not many are like this but, a few.

Fluid has it right, I like Nimh 1400's as they are very robust if you buy the high discharge ones. They take a fairly quick charge too so that can help.

I do use little lipos also like 1000Mah - 1200Mah but, I use a UBEC with it so I can get the right voltage.

No need to use internal bec but, I do it in two boats only. The T120 AKA Hobbywing 120 has a nice BEC that is attached to the esc but, it's a separate PCB from the esc. I use it for my spec classes like LSO, lmtd sprint Mono, Lmtd sprint cat only. My cat has a HK AS120 AKA SF120 and I use that Bec as well. The reason I use BEC in these boats is for simplification and I ONLY run 4S and limited amps in those classes.

        Sorry to Jack your thread,

I've been wondering about running a Life 6.6v pack on my tactic receiver with a traxxas water proof servo 2056 or 2075, I dont know which one I have.

Do any of you guys know the voltage limits on these? I've searched but have not found a max input voltage on them. I'd hate to fry it.

        Thanks

          Thanks Fluid and Ray,

Please excuse my ignorance here, even in the 80s and 90s when I raced 2wheel electric buggy I always powered the rx and servos with the BEC from the ESC.

I assume these batteries have a jack that fits into the rx, or do you have to make a harness or something?

Thanks again for your time and help.

Purpose built receiver packs will have the appropriate plug for plugging into your receiver or an adapter.

LiFe packs work well with the majority of receivers and servos that we use which are designed to work at up to six volts. 2S Lipo packs and have been known to fry receivers and servos.

Actually most popular surface receivers today are designed to run on up to 7.4 volts (or higher) - Futaba, HiTec, Spektrum, FlySky. The issues now are the servos, many of which are 6 volt maximum. If you have an older receiver, keep to 6 volts max unless the manufacturer states otherwise.

I looked and didn't find rx packs that aren't rechargeable; are they available?
Are you asking for non-rechargeable receiver packs? You put these together yourself using a receiver battery holder and four AA alkaline cells.

Your used to bigger boats that have more room, that's all!
Nope, I use the ESC's BEC in my boats, or a 5-pack of 1600 NiMHs. Haven't used non-rechargeable receiver packs in almost 20 years, they're so old-skool....

I use one of these in each of my boats...eliminated the voltage drop-outs from the BEC that caused radio problems...

These are the exact same ones I'm using, they work great! Most good chargers now a days are capable of charging all popular chemistrys. But you'll have to check yours to be sure.
