    Hydros?

Maybe it's just me as I am looking for a winter build but have hydros suddenly got really popular or have they always been?

I am leaning towards an ML kit or popeye but only because I seem to constantly be reading about them

Can't say if hydros were popular but for me i like the hydro HSX from rcmk and the vortex from DF.
I also believe popey is a nice hydro also but i want my hull to be made from epoxy resin.
Now i wait the vortex 34 cause i have all the electrics to make it a fast-fun hydro.
I belive the vortex is made from epoxy resin.

Hydros have always been popular but probably a bit more so among racers. In the past few years cats became very popular with sport runners as they are easier to set up and more user friendly. Cats also turn both left and right while most hydros only turn one direction well.

Hydros do not run as well on rough water compared to cats, the big draw to hydros is usually the higher speeds attained with hydros using the same power systems.

Still one Popeye hull at Astec, its as cheap as your going to get one, better price than buying direct from TFL and its all ready in the UK
its a no brainer if you want a bare hull.
the shipping cost for a bundle of wood ML kit to the UK is mega expensive!
we were in the same position a few months ago,Popeye or a ML , Allan did a cracking deal on a bare Popeye hull.
ready for a its maidern run now.

          Matt.

Why not have a look at the 'Insane FE 30'

Are you looking to become a part of the winners circle? Then Insane Boats’ superior quality and performance RC hulls and hardware is your way forward.

After all they did take out your Championships this year.
I've got a Popeye, & a Whiplash. There are a couple of Insanes at our club & the Popeye won't get near them. The Whip does though.

The Insane FE 30 would have been my Choice for a 4s setup, but I think Matt wanted to build a 6s hydro, same as I intended when I bought a Popeye hull, but I changed it to a 4s setup in the end.
Both hulls maybe a bit on the small side for 6s.

That depends on what you want to do. If you are happy with 55 mph then 6S is better than 4S - lower amp draw and longer run times with the same capacity, or lower capacity with the same run times. However if you want a 70 mph boat then yes, both are pretty small for all but flat water.

Thanks for all the input, sams correct in that I am looking to run a 6s1p setup but 55mph is fine for me so higher voltage and lower amp draw is the plan.

                  Aah! Sorry Matt.
Didn't know that you were thinking of 6s.
All I can say is that I'm having a ball with my ML Boatworks GP400 on 6s. Fast & Stable.
Would have won the Club championship in the last race of the season a few weeks ago. All I had to do was finish the race. But I STUPIDLY hit a dead boat in the last corner & was of course disqualified. Went from first to fourth. That's how close the points were after a year of racing.
But they are a great boat.

                    Ouch!

As I have lots of 3s packs it's easier for me to stick to running x2 packs in series in all my boats but appreciate the smaller hydros are meant for 4s, I was thinking something like a 3660 or 3674 with a kv of around 1400, a t120 esc and an m445 should be an ok set up for the popeye having searched other people's threads and seen ones run with the ul-1 motor and esc?
