    ProBoat 1/12 Miss Elam

    Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a Miss Elam, but the boat did not come with the plexi glass radio box cover. I have searched all over the place for this part, but found nothing. So I've decided to make the piece myself. Does anyone know what thickness the original plexi glass piece is?

    Thanks in advance,

    John

The length qnd width will be the same as the box. If the box (lip faces away from box if I remember correctly) outside edge has a radius on the outside it mqy look nicer shortening the plexi by a 1/16" to 1/8" so when in plqce the radius (if there) is showing and the plexi runs to edge all the way around. Silly detail but things like that cqn make the difference from being a hack job to looking professional. You will likely need a gasket as well if you want to make it look really good. 1/16" would probably be fine but 3mm waw probqbly used originally so 1/8" or 3mm will look great! If you have a good local supplier its nice to get your hands on things for feel. I have done similar jobs in the past, big and small. I ended up buying so diy window tint kits in various shades from very subtle tint to full black out. The light tints are my favorite, you can see everything inside but it makes thingw look neat and any dirt or grease smudges are hidden. I would never use the tint on a car but for things like this its great!
A lot of babbling away there, seems like a very simple job to do. Other peoples measurements may not suit your box as the factory may have cut them 1/4" bigger than the box, seems a good opportunity to do a nice clean job. stainless steel pan heads look good or socket head cap bolts in ss with those aluminum machined dress up washers in natural aluminum or an anodized color if it matches your boat look geat to! To much info, I know. I have always wanted one of them and I suppose I was more thinking about what I will do once I get mine! Shouldnt be anything holding you back, if you have nothing local there are many online shops that will cut accurately to size, possibly having smoked or tinted plastics to choose from. So much more out there now than plexiglass and lexan to choose from. Possibilities are endless. Good luck!

If it'll be easier for you, replace the factory box, with a nice waterproof traxxas radio box. They're cheap, and some of the best bang for the buck boxes out. Most everyone here have or still run them. Xtm, losi & sportwerks Rx boxes are great too. I recently used a small Betty crocker container from the dollar store too. It worked great......

When in doubt, think like Macgyver......

          Betty Crocker all the way!

Why are the vast majority of radio boxes just plain ugly!
I will look at the above recommended boxes, maybe I qm seeing the wrong ones!

If you look at the pro-boat retrieval duck, everything is contained in a Betty crocker type Tupperware box, the motor, servo, ESC & receiver . they have a lot of uses and look good too......

Well I made a radio box cover out of a piece of lexan I got from Lowes. Not to hard to make, fits well and will be easy to tape. My Elam is the nitro version so I doubt I would be able to get a different radio box to fit.

Hhhhmmmmm I wonder if you have a miss bud with the .15 dynamite motor sporting elem decals. The bud is the nitro model. The miss Elam is the brushless version. At least i've never seen a gas Elam. A majority of us replace nitro Rx box's with plexi lids. They're notorious for wicking moisture, even with the neoprene seal. Hopefully it works for you :).

yeah the gas elam exists. in fact last year i did a conversion to brushless. there is a thread on it too

jcgc, if your running the stock turn fin, i highly suggest you put a ul1 fin on. the stock fin is absolute rubbish. the trick part is, you'll need to fabricate a bracket, because as you know, the back of the sponson is a funny angle.
