    Dumas Eagle

hello im new here and im also new to this hobby,I have a Dumas Eagle that i built about 5 years ago,I never installed a motor or hardware, now im thinking of trying to install a electric motor, and making it electric instead of nitro can i do that with this boat? and if so what hardware should i use.I no longer have the plan sheets or instructions so i have no idea as to how i would go about doing something like this any info on this matter would be great..thx.

As long as you can make it waterproof you could make it electric. I just found a picture of the boat and if it looks like this one I see no problem as long as you seal all the holes up and that looks easy to do. I dont have the time now as I have to go to work but others might help now they have seen the boat. You might want to put things like dimensions and weight on here to help people help you. I will try to get back to you when I have time.

Pat other questions I should ask is how much do you want to spend on this boat and what speed are you wanting to get from it?

I found another picture of this boat when it was being built. I thought the 2 pictures might be good for reference unless you have some of your own boat

thanks for your reply Xzessperated,Ill try to get some more pic's. as far as dimensions go its 36 inches long abour 19 inches wide.when you remove the hatch and are looking down into the boat the rails on each side are 4 inches apart.as far as waterproofing im not sure how i could seal the hatch cuz its like vacum formed plastic that does not fit perfectly,if you look at the picyure you put up youll see there is a crack between the cowl and the top deck.

Id like the boat to be able to go prety fast but im not out to set any records,Like i said its my first boat so i dont want it to fast to be able to control.Ive had a couple people tell me i didnt need a hydro for my first boat,(oh well ) I have radio gear so I think all i need is hardware, a motorand a speed control ,Id like a brushless motor but Im not sure what would be a good choice there are so many out there.Im not sure how much ill spend but im gonna say about 400-500 dollars if thats possible? I know motors and controlers for larger boats arnt cheap!!

Looks like a interesting build but I do not want to burst your bubble but unless you can find a deal on batteries and a charger you will spend the $400 to $500 on good lipos and a charger ( you can start with nimh packs but that is going to add more weight to your boat and in the end you will like lipos more)

Although I do not have hydros I would suggest the following:

                Feigao 11XL or 12XL :
                http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...prod=fei-540XL

                2 lipos (7.4V 4800 ah) 4s in parallel "Elite" brand : http://www.rclipos.com/Elite.htm

Lipo charger. Cost greatly depends. I have an Imax B5 (40$) from e-bay working ok.

                ESC X-power 100a
                http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...od=xpo-blb100a

                Propeller: About 45-48 mm diam.

The above are the cheapest options to choose.

For the rest of the stuff the other members with hydros will help.

This is a big boat and an XL will be overworked. You will need someting bigger.

thank you all for your info,Maybe I should start out with something a bit smaller for my first project,Would this be a wise thing to do?If so any ideas on a good choice,(I enjoy building so some sort of kit would be right up my alley) unless you think a pre made hull would be better.. I was reading about a boat called a renagade rigger, what do you think about that, 89 bucks for the kit and a motor is included.

If you want to do a hydro on the cheap, and you like to build, consider either a Campbell Classic Hydro (shovelnose) or a Vac-U-Pickle (early picklefork). There is a boatload of info on this site for both of them (pun intended). Use the brushless system from the SuperVee 27 (cheap and readily available). Use either a 4S LiPo or 12-cell NiMh, with props in the M440 - X640 - X645 range. Start with the smallest props first and check temperatures of motor cells/ESC as you begin testing.

Pat you have had some good advice while I was away. That is quite a big boat and it would be expensive to get some real speed from it and have it perform reliably.
I would be at least thinking of Neu motor and Castle Creation esc and they start to add up to some serious money by the time you add all the other bits and pieces to it.
Dr. Jet has given you some very good advice. Fast electrics can be expensive if you do not take precautions and look after the motor, esc and battery.
I will keep an eye on your post and see which way you go
