Used to be a great site. I gave up on it about 2 years ago I guess, every thread seemed to end up as a bunch of bickering over rules. Got really nasty for a while.
Really too bad, some of the build contests were very interesting to follow, some beautiful work!
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

Yes, bickering and egos cutting others down to build themselves uppretty much killed that forum.

The main thing that tore a hole in the fabric that was RummRunner and FE at the time was the introduction of Lithium Polymer technology. Took me a long time to get on board too but there were some that were convinced that LiPo would spell the end of FE and FE racing. The sky was falling. Nobody had a filter on their fingers. Friendships were destroyed and respect wasn't the flavor of the day. Guys would type something absolutely outrageous or even offensive and then act surprised when someone called them on it. Disagreements over how to implement an idea would rage on for weeks.

Some of the mods were way into the debate over LiPo and for a time there were censorship issues. That went away eventually but the exodus had already begun.

It really bothers me when I see some of the same things have moved to this forum.

They used to sell wooden lazer boats that ran great but all of a sudden quit making or selling them. I wanted to buy the bigger monos but got a email saying they were closing out sales end of site. Never been back! The lazer boats were shallow type and ran GREAT!

Why would it be so different? Most of the same troublemakers migrated to OSE once there were not enough threads left to troll. OSE learned from the RRR failures and now support firm moderation. The next time anyone feels like trashing a mod, remember RRR.

this forum is pretty good, there is a forum member or two with a very high post count that contributes nothing and just picks on people but OSE is a good place to learn and share ideas. There are some great minds on this site so for me their advice out shines the bs. I've met great people on this site and hang out regularly with some members.

Jay, I get that but if we see a trend that is similar to what happened over there we have to call it out.

The only part of this forum with censorship issues I've seen is the FS forum and that is NOT the mods fault. It's those that complain that their object isn't at the top of the page.......you know cuz that will make it sell.

You and Ready are 100% right there. It should not be a surprise to see the behavior - but neither should we forget history and let it happen again here. Poor moderation is the death knell to so many Internet forums.

Regarding the FS forum, I understand that some members want it, but sales usually end up with someone offering an insultingly low price even if the original price was fair. I sell very little there, mostly I use eBay or sell locally. I buy a little on the FS forum but I wouldn't pass out if it were eliminated.

I ran across the article below some years ago, and while I don't necessarily agree 100% it is insightful.

"All forums have a sort of life cycle:

                          1) in the beginning a forum may never get enough knowledgeable contributing members to ever achieve any value. They say the average is 1 person in 250 will take the time to register and contribute to a forum. Take a guess how many become ‘valuable’ members.

                          2) As a forum matures and gained enough momentum if they (perhaps 150 active members) who read and post a forum can become can be quite valuable. By this time there’s is a sizeable interest and a relatively large repository of relation information and intelligent discussions

                          3) Forums begin experiencing growing pains. As the active user base reached 1000 members a divide forms There are now two distinct groups of people 'newbies' and 'veterans.' The vets begin creating FAQs and keep instruct newbies to RTFM and read the FAQ.

                          4) Ultimately, the vets quit reading and posting. The forum is composed of lots of ‘newbies’ who don't know much about the subject of the forum. The vets who know have dropped out. Soon there are no authorities and the forum grows silent and useless.

Simply put most things that begin good become victims of their own success..."

Seems History is being forgotten again. I didn't see where the site was under-moderated at all. In fact just the opposite. The site ownership along with the moderators took the position of deciding what they thought would be best for the NAMBA membership in regards to the changing technology and rules revisions. Threads disappeared, titles were changed, posts were moved and or selectively censored. The racers began to move these discussions over to another forum and never went back.

My club and my deceased racing buddy (Drobie) authored one of the more controversal rule packages. I still remember Drobie getting the phone calls from this group with physical retribution. The site is done - put a fork in it.
