    Paint Job?? Finish??

I painted this ML over the summer and had worked out most of the orange peel on the top surfaces. Don't get me wrong, the paint is still far from prestine and there are nicks/scratches, but it was an experiment.

So......calling all paint guys! To reach the smooth finish, it took me a ton of wet sanding and then polishing with a 3" wool pad w/drill. I was wondering if there was a quicker way. I've heard rumors of higher grit polish and a DA buffer to get out orange peel. Anyone heard of this method? Sure seems like it would beat wet sanding and would save me a ton of time on the two builds I have going currently.

    Thanks.

pete---we all like nice paint jobs---but what happens during a race! lots of work right down the tubes, so i.m.o. a shelf boat paint job isn't needed on a racer!

wet sand and buff is the way. your problem is using the drill. you need a proper buffing setup (high speed buffer and foam pad with proper compounds)

It is the wet sanding by hand that I'm trying to avoid. The drill/buff (believe it or not) works quite well.

I've heard of 'orange peel' removal pads used on DA polishers as an alternative to wet sanding. Have you ever tried them?

I agree with Heaving earth & L.b.l. wet sand it up, sharpen everything up and drive it like it's stolen . make the paint job a winter project

Just found an article/video. The pads are denim, and made by Carpro. Interesting stuff.

Fred - I'll bring the boat to the Elks next Sunday!!

I received the denim pads yesterday. I tried a test spot on a black boat with heavy orange peel on the bottom. So far, not impressed. I spent longer than wet sanding, and the orange peel is still there! I even used heavy compound (M100). Oh well, I guess it's back to elbow grease and wet sanding for future projects! Worth a try though.

It could just be that the procedure is not suitable to KlassKote epoxy paint. People claim it works on automotive paint.
