    Villain IV upgrade question

    Hello everybody .

I recently picked up this original scale mono, & I've placed some orders to get her whipped into shape . At he moment she's bone stock, but not for long.....

I contacted Bugzilla for a 24v / 75a Astroflight ESC he has kicking around I would like to purchase, to replace the stock xl-1 esc.

I ordered an Octura X447 counter rotating prop set with 3.175mm half shafts & an ESC cooling kit from fun rc boats since Steven is out of stock. I also ordered eight 4mmx8mmx3mm sealed bearings to replace the oil lite bushings in the stuffing tubes & out drives from fleabay. While I was at it, I picked up a deck railing & airhorn set too .

I was going to order 2 of the villain ex motors, but they're 24T. The stock iv motors are 20T stingers which are faster, but I am thinking of trinity speed gems 2 aquartz motors. They're 19Tx2 22,200kv. I plan on running 4s 30c thunderpower cells for 32,000 rrpm. I could go with speed gems sapphire 17x1 24,000kv for 35,0000 rpm

I am replacing the stock plastic servo with a Jr racing z4800s hi speed/torque 6v metal geared servo. I would like to upgrade the plastic u-joints with something better. There are a few choices I found, but I as wondering if you guys had any input on u-joint upgrades ?..

Graupner makes the 4mm u-joints which are supposed to be stronger, but a lot of people say that their strong but brittle ?. http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...prod=grp-354.4

I also found these 4mm to 3.175mm u-joints on fleabay, any thoughts ?..

I will also be ordering factory gearing 28t / 14t in steel from tower hobbies. I can always go up I pinion size too... :)

Any thoughts or ideas would be great. I usually compare notes with make-a-wake but I am not sure how he's doing these days. Thanks

My take is you want to keep it original by your posting! I did away with factory equipment and modded with a UL-1 motor on 4S and a 440 prop and a 120 esc with twin turn fins and no trim tabs ( not needed ).

Your right southwest, I am kind of a vintage junkie

I really like the scale design and the dual out drive setup. With a few modern mods you can really get these zippin' along. My last one had an astroflight ESC, x447 props, modified gearing and 3s power. That one surprised my buddy cause it was faster than his brushless pro-boat apache .

I've got a ul-1 & a ul-1 powered mean machine for faster speeds, but these are a blast to run. If I turned it into a single drive, it would just be another fast mono .

Ok, I forgot to factor in the villain's 2:1 gear reduction drive. To get close to a respectable 35,000 rpm at the props, it needs 48,000kv motors on 4s power.. Thats just under 70,000 at the motor, & 35,000 out back @ wot. Probably a lil' less with load too, but it should be pretty respectable......

On srcond thought, if possible, changing the gearing to 1:1 with 14t/14t & running 2200kv motors would be simpler :)

I still have Hughey gear drive systems but since bl systems came, I just stored them. Now it was fun with Hughey systems. Ed helped me out a lot!
