Hello all- I'm still a noob, but have some knowledge so I assume that makes me dangerous.
A bunch of years ago (2004) I started with a Zig-Zag racer, then quickly graduated to a Traxxas Villian – added better cooling etc. Ah the fun. Then I decided to get ambitious and build a FE boat with no background or local hobby shop support- FE in Northern Colorado is a small group and I failed to find them. But what the heck I thought; I have time and would figure it out. So Like Dr. Frankenstein I assumed bigger would be easier and picked up a 51” deep v fiberglass hull from one of the ebay guys (who still sells them today) with stringers. I began my search for parts. Again, locating an individual online, I discussed my goals on the phone to build a FE. In late 2005 the parts arrived.
-Lehner 2280 with cooling jacket, Hacker Master 77-O-Navy brushless speed control, 2 -3700 Mah NiMh with Deans plugs and an Octura x457 prop.
Keep in mind I had never even heard a FE run before in real life and I began building from pictures I had seen very little knowledge and a few RC boat mags. I knew from the beginning that this would be an experiment. And did I learn. Too much JB weld is heavy. Too much floatation foam is heavy. If anyone would like to write a book on how NOT to build a FE, I am available for interviews. But it did run – although not fast. Time got away from me and a few years passed before the itch raised its head. This time I opted for a 56” cat. rtr with a nemesis gold 592 and castle 200 HV ESC with lipos from Fine Design. Ah, very nice. I find myself ready for a project again as winter is approaching and looking to acquire the knowledge to avoid repeating my first attempt.
So the point of this long introduction-I find myself seeking redemption from the first project and seeking a deep v design, maybe 40”-50” range - and would love to be in the 60 MPH neighborhood. Is that speed and hull combo realistic?
I am very receptive to suggestion and input for a hull, motor, prop and ESC. Fast and fun is my goal. I look forward to learning and sharing with others. Thanks in advance and I have included some pic of the "Big Orange" for your amusement.
