I am trying to decide between the Leo 5698 ( not sure on the kv yet ) or the Castle 2028 motors for my 58" Atomic Cat. I bought this without the motor, esc or radio. I have two castle motors in a couple of rc trucks and they have performed fantastic for me in the two years of running them. I see that the 2028 has heat sink fins around the can, how would this work for a cooling jacket set up or would the heat sink be enough. I would like to be able to get to the high 50's or even into the 60mph with this hull if that is possible. I do plan on adding some extra glass or carbon fiber to the hull as well. Possible run on 10 cell but 8 cell would be preferred as I could then also use the lipos (2 x 4 cell in series) in my racing buggy if they fit. I am wondering about the esc as well, the castle hydra looks like it would be perfect but it sure is pricey so I will be looking for something that can do the job for a little less money. Basically im looking for a fairly quick and reliable set up with decent run times. You folks have helped me out greatly with my impulse 31 and BJ 29 "rebuilds" so I am kind of hoping for the same with this boat. Thanks for all the help in the last couple of weeks, my 4074 motors just cleared customs and should be here very soon.

Thanks very much atechbh, I will be going with that motor as well as the swordfish 300hv ESC that Steven recommended . The stock prop shaft on this boat measures 5mm in dia so I may have to replace the stock flex shaft set up to be able to use the more common props available. The boat also came with a three blade "cnc" prop ( not very balanced) would you recommend an x457 3 blade or the x457 2 blade. 10 cell is what I will be using I guess if I want any kind of good speed for sure.Comment

Good move on the SF300HV, it's worth the extra headroom. I run a 2028 in my 45" mono, with a X460/3 detongued, and it pulls just under 240 amps on 10s.My private off road rc track

2028 is way bigger and more powerful than the leo 5698. the sf300 is a great controller very easy to program and data logging seems pretty accurate to me. You will DEFINITELY want to run 10s2p or 8s2p with this motor. its big and will pull some serious amps.Comment

The Leopard 56110 is very close to the 2028 with some different kv options.

By 10s2p do you mean say for example 2 separate 5 cell 5000mah packs connected in series to make a 10 cell 5000mah pack and then connect those two separate packs ( 4 lopos total) together in parallel to make 2 10 cell 10,000mah packs. or did you mean just two 5 cell packs connected together in series to make 10 cell at 5000mah. I have never seen a 10cell lipo pack before, the biggest for me is a 6 cell pack. I do get confused at time about this. I usually connect two 3 cell packs in series to make 6 cell power for my rc trucks. This is how I was going to run this boat, using two 5 cell 5000mah packs in series to make a 10 cell 5000mah system. Mind you im not sure what kind of run times I would get going this way.Comment

Hi Steven I measured the distance between the wooden rails where the motor mount is and I only have 3 inches of width between them. I don't see the specs for the width of the OSE-80974 motor mount for the Leopard 56110 motor. If the water jacket for the 56110 is 2.52 inches in diameter and it sits inside the motor mount then im thinking it will not fit. Im starting to rethink my goals for this hull and perhaps I should settle on 50mph, would a motor with a smaller diameter get this hull up to around the 50mph mark. Here is a picture of what I am working with, perhaps you or someone else has a solution, I would really like to avoid hacking up the wood as much as possible. The photo shows the stock mount, It would be great if I could use that but the space between the arms is 2.5 inches then add in the nuts and it gets even smaller, the holes are not tapped so they used nuts instead ( cheaper way) I can drill out the front to accept the motor and maybe use a shorter head bolt on the inside as it is recessed approx. 1/8th of an inch and put the nuts on the outside. Do you know the bolt hole mounting distance on the 56110 as in 25mm like the 4074. Speaking of that motor both my 4074 motors came in today along with the other parts, thanks for the fast service once again. _DSC5137 copy rs.jpg_DSC5138 copy rs.jpgComment

4 5s packs. two in series then two in parallel. the leopard 56110 is definitely a good option too i've never had a leopard motor let me down.Comment

Yes I will be putting this together over the winter so no big rush. I would like to settle on a motor and mount though as I will be purchasing those items first. A custom motor mount would be awesome. The length is not a problem it's just the width at 3 inches max that may be the issue. Thanks again for you help.Comment

I just received two Leopard 4074 1650kv motors from OSE for my Impulse31 and Blackjack29, cant wait to try them out, good to know they are reliable. I have also upgraded the flex cables, props and ESC's. I will run these boats with the new gear in them for a while. I will then put the stock gear back in them and give the boats to my son, he is also into rc. I can then use the upgraded motors and esc's in some quality hulls. It is always more fun when we run our trucks and or copters together so I figure if I can get him into FE boating as well it should be the same. That is the plan anyways but time will always have the last say.Comment
