I went to the hobby shop today to look at purchasing the new RC4WD Gelande 2 trail truck. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted a rather large box with the words Atomik ARC 58"cat on it. I asked the clerk if I could have a peek inside the box and before he opened it I noticed the price tag and said to myself "better not or im sleeping outside with the hound". I then noticed they had the ARR version priced at $579. CDN. sitting behind the first one. At that price that put the boat only $169. more than the truck, my head was swimming, truck or boat, truck or boat. Part of the problem were I live is we only get the generic brands of boats, Aquacraft, Proboat,Traxxas and such and if you want something different you have to have it shipped in and that gets expensive real fast. Here I was with an option for a nice large sized cat that I could actually take home with me today, no shipping charges for over sized items or any of that. Thinking time was over as soon as I opened the box up and had a good long gander at the beast inside. This really is quite a bit larger than my Blackjack 29 and Impulse31. That's when I thought "this is going to be hard to hide from the missus that's for sure"
. I also remembered that next month will be our 30 year wedding anniversary, oh what to do, what to do. Well she has been a good sport over all the years with putting up with all my hobbies and adventures so I tossed caution to the wind and brought it home. To my surprise when I carried it into the house all she said was "that one sure is big". I told her it was going to be a winter project and it was much cheaper than the RTR version. She then asked me if I remembered what next month was, I said you bet I do honey next month is 1/3 off all RC truck parts at the hobby shop, wrong answer, I sure hope it don't get to cold out side for the next few nights lol.
From what my newbie eyes can see this hull looks to be very well made, the running hardware seems to be up to the task although the rudder is not offset. I like the sealed radio box and all the wooden parts fit together and have a nice finish to them. The motor mount looks very beefy but depending on the motor I chose I may or may not be able to use it. I have been leaning toward the Leopard 5698 1100kv but will need some input from you folks that have the experience with the larger boats. I was also wondering about the esc, I have purchased two Seaking 180amp units for my other two hulls but am wondering if I need something even more heavy duty for the larger cat. I think I will stay with a 6 cell set up so I can use the lipo's I already have, Gens ace 5000 mah 40c 3 cell packs. As was the case before I am open to all suggestions regarding everything I should do to this boat, it will be my winter project so im not in any big rush. I will be learning the proper operation of FE boats on my Blackjack and Impulse before I attempt to take out the Atomik but im not sure if bigger is easier or not. It sure is funny how shopping for one thing can lead to something completely different, the wife sent me to town once to get milk and I came home with beer because it was on sale
, she still wont let me live that one down and perhaps that's why she wasn't to surprised at the boat coming in the door instead of a truck. Looks like next month I will be getting her something extra extra special.
