    Wtf

Like I said WTF. I just don't get it. This us getting ridiculous. ok so here is my problems my Proboat Mystic out of the blue having all kind of esc and engine problems and now a brand new Genesis cat with a Skywing 159amp esc running a 2000 kv motor freakin blows up inside my brand new boat on 4s. I am getting so sick and tired of having to fish my boats out of ponds because of problems thst I cant freakin figure out and now my new smells like shi*. Am I doing something wrong, the last 5 times I have run my boats have ended with a ESC explosion wires and plugs melted off my motor and esc snd all on setups that should have no issues.

To much prop? To much prop in water (load)?

159A esc? Skywing? Arent those the cheapie ones?

More times than not the problems we have are problems we create not equipment failure due to defects.

Yes, I'd say you are. There are may reasons for ESC explosions, usually owner caused. The Genesis is a pretty large boat for 4Sa athough many run it on 4.

      - Exactly what is the motor being used?
      - How much timing advance?
      - What prop?
      - Exactly what cells/pack configuration?
      - Does the cat plane out or plow?
      - How long does it run each time before it blows?
      - A photo or the interior and the transom will help us to help you.

BTW the terrible odor can be mostly removed with denatured or isopropyl alcohol. Use plenty of the alcohol (it's cheap) and rags.

This usually goes unasked, because it's fairly obvious, but just in case... With the coupler/motor removed... how easy does the driveshaft rotate??

Not sure who makes the esc for mystic but I have lost faith in the seawing esc,s. Both the 180's and 120's I have were all problematic from the start.I personally wont be buying anymore.

The Pro Boat ESCs are supplied by Dynamite

something is getting really hot before the fire (obviously). if this is happening on all setups have you tried a different set of batteries? what kinda plugs you using on your batteries, possible arcing? something like that will very reliably cause a fire and fast. i would use a different set of batteries with bullet connectors to remove any doubt that this is the problem.

the hull is fiberglass on CF hulls the hull itself conducts electricity and can cause shorts but this isn't the case.

like you said this is a trusted setup although im not so sure about the 160 amp hobbyking esc. the seaking 180 is quite a robust esc it takes a lot to kill one even with a less than friendly setup. when stuff burns immediately its usually user error of some sort and it seems like you know this and thats why you're here so no offense we've all made errors (i myself some huge ones) and kicked ourselves afterwards.

Could you post a link to the 160a esc. I recall reading about one that HK sells that had a reputation for burning up because the two boards that are stacked not being properly assembled together. Not sure if its the one you tried.Esc problems are not always user error. Sometimes they are just plain NFG. It sucks but it happens.

I hate to say this but the esc's and motor in the genesis supplied from Hobby Wing are mostly junk. The boat is really just good as a shell and hardware and upgrade from there.

if going for a new esc i'd go seaking 180 or perhaps a swordfish 200 available here in the shop. if its a new boat make a build thread with pics ppl will guide you along. sucks when stuff burns, can you post more information on the other few escs that burned, maye a piece of information is the clue if they're all failing and if from different manufacturers.

what battery connectors you using again? if pos/neg make contact the stuff you described would happen over and over.

That is normal. I've lost count of the car guys who have said the same thing. The big difference is the much higher amp draw - just like in full scale boats and car engines. Even the steady state amp draw is a LOT higher than in cars and planes. Running a lot at part throttle is very very hard on controllers and can cause them to eventually fail. Your issues may be result of cumulative damage in setups which did not burst into flames the first few times but hurt the ESC.

Well don't let it beat you. I have had an extremely frustrating season as well and 90% of that has been caused by hobbywing esc.s. I will be going with SF from now on unless something else comes along. the hobbywing esc,s have not been kind to me so i'm done with them.
