If this subject has came up before I apologize. Search gave me nothing... Looking for a gps unit to measure the speed I am getting. Basically all I have looked at are the garmins. (forerunner 101/301, geko) Just wondering if anyone has advice on which model I should get, or if there are other options out there that I am missing? Maybe the one's I've listed are my best options? Thanks for any and all input.
Which GPS unit should I get?

I've seen guys that pick up a cheap smartphone in a trade or on craigslist, then put a gps logger/transponder app on it. When they run they drop it in a ziplock & stick it in the hull.....Comment

I had the Garmin forerunner 101 amd worked good...until I was doing speed runs with my 1/5 scale truck. Now it's gone. I was suggesting the other two simply due to their size and weight.Comment

Forerunner 201 is great. Check ebay.

If I may...
These GPS units mentioned are all great if you want a speed from a single-moment in time... However, as anyone who has used real data logging will tell you, the accuracy of the speeds... especially the "Max" speed, can really be suspect. One good hop, and suddenly your boat is 5-10mph faster... I have a data point showing my 4S powered Pro Boat Impluse 31, with stock power system and a solid prop, hitting 63mph... That happened to be just after it separated from the water at 53mph and went airborne... The speed returned to around 50 when it made contact with the water again.
My point is, that something more appropriate for really giving the you the true story on speeds would be an EagleTree, setup with a GPS module.
For mine, I ONLY use the EagleTree for GPS recording, so I set it up to operate off of a small, 450mAh lipo 2S pack, and it has worked great. You have the benefit of being able to log temps, etc. as well.
From this, you get actual speed curves, so you can really see what kinds of speeds you are getting. And, you'll avoid the "spikes" that breed claims of "Hit 58 with my stock Miss Geico" today...
Mine is the V3, But they all work about the same...

Darin is right, although any GPS can give suprrious readings. I once got a 160 mph reading in my near-stock Motley Crew without any flips or rolls. But really, most readings are quite accurate. I usually install a GPS during SAW runs, and if my line through the traps is straight and my speed is constant then the GPS and official speeds are usually within 1-2 mph.
The cheapest route is probably to go with a used Forerunner (101, 201 or 301) if all you want is max speed, but these are larger than the HobbyKing offering. I paid $50 shipped for an as-new Forerunner 201 on eBay and it works great. The Eagle Tree is a good investment if you don't use a data-logging ESC, but it is more costly and can be a pain to properly install.

I wonder about maybe using an older version of an iPhone or other smartphone with GPS tracking?? The ability to plot the speeds as opposed to just getting an instantaneous speed is really useful for some things. I like the EagleTree because I can actually plot my data onto a Google Earth map and see exactly where I was driving as well as how fast at each point... Fun stuff.
As for installing, while it is more costly, when I use mine for JUST GPS data, installation is actually very simple. Really just plugging in the GPS module, then providing a 2S power supply, which is where a small 250 or 450mAh lipo pack comes in... You'll want the memory expander if you have the older V2 or V3 versions... the GPS uses a lot of data points.Darin E. Jordan - Renton, WA

You can always redneck it like my friend does. He uses a radar gun he picked up for $15 on fleabay. He checked it against a police radar, its dead on. Usually he drives the boat & his son zaps the gun which keeps him entertained, a 2 for 1 bonus....

Now that's another good idea there. You could also mount the gun on a tripod and use a velcro strap to hold the button in if you're at the lake by yourself. But I think I would just buy a Bushnell new for what they cost.Comment
