Removing paint from epoxy glass cowls ?

Hi all need to remove Krylon and Duplicolor paint from fiberglass cowl laid up with Pacers z-poxy finishing resin im considering using chemical paint remover .Is there a certain brand i should be using ? My concern is the paint remover may attack the resin.Regards Andris Golts.

Better off to sand with 220 grit wet. It should go fairly quick, then finish off with 400++...

you're right, it can attack it if left on for too long. You can use a paint stripper but make sure to get it off very quickly. paint and stripper included. I haven't had a problem with paint stripper messing up gel coat but have had issues with it eating up west systems resin and making it soft. Sanding with a block of sorts will work well as small imperfections will have been filled with the paint you used, so in the end you'll get something that looks and sticks better. good luck.

Thanks to all for the great information experimented with the Heirloom remover from Home depot works real fast at removing paint but right after i wiped the fiberglass with a cloth soaked in water and there was no softening of the resin .As to viper 1 mentioning too lazy the remover took all the paint off in 10 minutes as previously sanding a cowl that size took me 2hrs. Sorry I'm a 'classically schooled' modeller... you know the ones; no pain, no gain. More satisfaction when it took an effort, that kind of stuff.

Shouldn't take 2 hrs though, tip; sand wet use different grits of paper.

I'm going out to get some of this stuff to do my Phil Thomas hull. Needs to be NAMBA legal by the Nats so it needs mods, therefore new paint too... Bummer but, thanks for the quick method.

Stuff works good. In my experience this hasn't eaten up fiberglass and i have used it a few times. this paint stripper works almost immediately you can start scraping in like 10 minutes paint comes right off. make sure to clean the heck out of the hatch afterwards. last thing you need is a pocket in the hatch with an ounce of paint thinner stored in it for months on end you know.

brake fluid will take paint off of almost anything without harming it. I had a plastic rc truck body from when I was a kid that I couldn't get the 9 layers of spray paint off with anything that didn't eat the plastic. Finally someone suggested soaking it in brake fluid and within days the paint had all released. I used a nylon parts brush to just wipe it off. It worked surprisingly well. Some say dot4 brake fluid works better than standard dot3, but I haven't tried it.
