Understanding batteries? Newbie Question

Ok so im kinda new to the hole electric boat deal and im just trying to get a grasp on how to pic batteries. Now I know the more milliamps the better performance but the C rating has me a little confused and also when a battery that says like 2S2P or 2S1P I dont know what that means. I was hoping that some of you guys can shed some light on this.
