cooling idea for a fightercat motor in a Genesis...

hey guys I FINALLY got Genesis in the water with this motor , 1600kv or 1650kv can't remember. on 6s2p 180a seaking esc. it has cured my need for speed but after a short run the motor is way to hot to touch! I thought about trying to vent the cowl somehow, buttill I get my weight figured out it is likely I could still flip it....any thoughts? thanks a ton in advance!

Don't know much about outrunners but I do know they run much hotter then in runners. Some of the more experienced out runner guys might ask what timing you are running?

What prop are you using? How long did you run? Too much prop or running too long with a powerful setup can overheat the motor and the ESC and packs.

I just built a fightercat daytona with their 3730 1580kv outrunner. Like you I have hot to the touch temps, when measured with my heat gun are 120-135F after a 5-6 minute run. This is totally normal for an outrunner, they just run hotter. As a comparison my T180 ESC measures a cool 100F on the ESC caps so I know the load is normal. don't sweat the motor temps!

So hello limitedr1 what was the temp of the motor ?

I run a P1 kos with the stock 2000kv outrunner and my normal running temps on the motor are 165f to 185f,
And they like high timing to.

Are you currently using water cooled motor mounts?

not sure what actual motor temps were. but hot, like could not hold a finger on it like at all hot. esc seemed ok. id say warm is all. never had to take a temp gun with me on my electric stuff. I wanna say timing is around the 12 area. yea water cooled motor mount.I used to run a Leo 1250kv so no temp at all after running. I wanna GPS it this weekend but wasn't sure that kinda hear was normal. helis have never got that hot. nothing close really so I kinda freaked

Timing should be from 15* to 30* on those FC motors,
That is what Ben said to set them at.

Anything higher then 15* just creates more heat.

1600kv is pretty hot for 6s. 5 to 8 minutes is too long for nearly any setup. Especially with a hot setup.

I think 1580kv is totally fine for this boat on 6s. Out runners do run hotter than inrunners, I remember looking at scorpions site their motors can handle like 400 degrees lol. I think your setup is more than fine I have thought long and hard about cooling for these motors the motor mount I posted made by Jim at southriver rc boats is just awesome and is vented to allow the motor to do its job naturally too.

What do I know. As usual, opinions will vary.

Maybe run it for 10 minutes at 1/4 throttle. That should give it time to cool off.

You should probably pick out your next setup for after this one burns up and takes the speedo and batteries with it.
