    Miss Geico 24

I just purchased this boat on Sunday and have mixed reviews...

My first outing was Sunday night, after bringing the boat home I put the 7.2 (6) cell battery it came with on my charger (not the cheap charger it came with), while I went thru the boat, checking all the hardware, re-securing the electronics with better Velcro and what not. After the battery said it was charged, I let it cool down then headed down to the lake, I was pretty excited because the people at the hobby shop said this was a great boat for the price and I would be happy with it. So I put the boat in the water and away we go...or so I thought, lol...the boat would only run with intermediate bursts, then die, after playing with the throttle trim on the remote for a bit and trying anything I knew, boat wouldn't go. So I headed back up to the house, to do some investigation. Somewhere online I read that sometimes the battery may give a false peak during the initial charge. So I figured that was my problem. Needless to say I was kinda disappointed that night.

Monday morning I put the battery on my charger and actually cycled the battery (discharge / charge) two times, it took a while but it seemed to have worked, checked the volts on the battery after it was done and cooled down and it read 9.2v. I then also charged one of my 7 cells from another RC I have to take it just to try it out. Down to the lake I go. I put the 6-cell in, and this time the boat would move consistently, but it didn't even have enough power to plane out, it was the speed of about a toys r us tyco boat, very disappointed at that point. So I brought the boat back to the dock and switched the battery to the 7-cell I brought....and wow, what a difference, that's how I expected the boat to run, I know it wasn't gonna be brushless/lipo fast, but I at least expected it to be fun. At that point I was finally happy with my purchase.

    So I have two questions:

    1. Can the supplied battery just be a bad battery? Should I try cycling it again on the charger?

    2. After running the 7-cell for about 5 minutes, I brought the boat in just to check things out, make sure it wasn't getting too hot and make sure it wasn't taking on water, and the motor and battery were both very hot to the touch, almost not touchable hot. Is this normal? The manual says the stock motor and esc can handle up to an 8-cell battery.

Sorry for the long post, and the newbie questions. I am pretty familiar with rc cars and trucks, but this is my very first boat.

    Thanks!!

Take it back to the hobby shop and return it mad get your money back. If you want a geico get the 29. If that's out of your budget there are other boats you can buy in that price range. Get a boat with a brushless motor

Your welcome. What did you pay for the 24? My first FE was the MG 29. The 29 is brushless, faster, more stable. Plus with the 29 can be modified to run much fast. Besides all those things your 24 should be drivable and without heating up like that so something is off.

I was being kinda sarcastic...lol...I know all the plus's of brushless motors, but to be honest with you, I don't need that at this point...I am just looking for something fun to bash around with in the water...I am not going to be racing, nor do I really want to deal with lipo batteries...maybe in the future if I continue boating...but right now with all my other hobbies, I am just looking for something to kill time while sitting at the lake drinkin beers...LOL

That being said, I paid $159 for this boat, and ok with the speed it was giving me with the 7cell battery...just concerned about the heat...and I know the battery it came with only a 7.2, but it should at least attempt to move the boat in my opinion...

Haha. It shouldn't be that hot tho. Take back to the store anyways and exchange it for another one if you don't want your money back swap it for another one. That's what warranty is for

ok so I just figured out that a 6cell battery is just not good for this boat, I have tried different ones that I have that I know are good, I have no idea why they sell it with one...I have run a couple of my 7cell packs with it, and I am pretty happy for now with the speed...its fun enough for now...

I do have a couple of 2S lipos from my Blitz still, do you think its safe to use on this boat? the esc does have a LVC switch, but I haven't tried using one of my lipos yet.

Hi Bart, if the esc will run lipos ( check the programming), then go for it, keep an eye on temps still. To be fair it would seem that most hobby shop people seem to be sellers not users, they don't even know the products they sell very well, they just go on the box blurb!

That's not usually the way it works, I know that horizon authorizes hobby shops to do what makes the customer happy ( give them a new battery) but they usually do not like unit returns unless it goes through them.

I have had cases where the stock motors had to be run for a bit with no load on them to break in the brushes and some times you will get a bad motor and it will run hot.

Ok so apparantly the stock motor in this doesnt like the lipo power...i ran (2) 2S 1800mah packs parallel....ran ok, didnt seem to get too hot...brought it in before the LVC came on....put boat away...went to use it again the next day after charging batteries...and there was no motor response, steering worked though...so I have a few Titan 12t motors in my tool box, I hooked the wires up on one just to check to see if i got a response...which i did...so my question is, do you think I can run one of these 12t motors without any other issues? I see that the shaft is a little longer, which i figure i can just shave down...again, i am really not looking to spend a ton of money on this thing...i have too many other hobbies that take my money...lol...
