    Hydro strut question?

I see a lot of hydro builds using the sport 20 strut as opposed to the sport 21. The sport 20 strut extends the shaft back farther than the typical flush to the strut setup. Can somebody explain the benefit, and is it worth switching to the extended 20 strut on my new Whiplash sport 20?

The strut in your link is put together backwards.

I know, and I'm pretty sure that discussion has been debated before, not necessarily put together backwards, the brackets are just swung around the other way.........
Just posted it for reference, as you can still see that the end the prop would be at protrudes well past the normal flush position. Obvously that puts the prop farther back, I'm just wondering what the benefits are on a hydro to do that...........

Ya know Kevin,I have no idea what difference it makes, but I'm using the sport 20 flat bottom on my Elam and it is really nice. I know I get a good amount of lift from it...

In theory I think putting the prop farther back would provide slightly more lift. Not sure how much difference it would actually be in reality.

I think Kevin's question is why have the extension on the 20 vs just extending the bracket on the 21 strut. Either way, the prop ends up in the same spot

The prop will run in cleaner water with the extended strut. Mounted close to the strut blade the divided water may not have time to get back together before it hits the prop, reducing thrust. This happens when the prop gets slightly submerged as in cornering or rough water. All my current hydros run an extended strut. It also lengthens the wheelbase of the boat, fooling it into thinking it is a longer hull.

Thanks Fluid, that's kind of what I was looking for. I can see that with a hydro, as with other types of hulls the stuffing tube/strut prob don't run nearly as deep in corners, and my current setup does slow quite a bit in turns.

Hey Fluid(or anybody else), looking at the pictures of the 2 different struts, it appears that the mounting brackets for the 20 are shorter, bringing the whole thing closer to the transom, wouldn't this cancel out the extension, and keep the "wheelbase" essentially the same? I do like the idea though, and am considering getting the 20 and using it with the 21 brackets.......

Kevin, the 21 comes with 2 different brackets, which I'm sure you've noticed, the mono and the hydro. Is the hydro bracket for the 21 the same one on the 20? I know the mono bracket has like 2" of setback. The hydro bracket for the 21 is probablyThe same as the 20. I think in the OSE photos youre only seeing the mono bracket

Actually I did not pick up on the 2 options, that explains it, thanks.
