Most people here are from North America and they are not required to run safety loops to race so most racers do not fit them, and none of the American (designed) RTRs have them fitted so few sports boaters have seen them and it is not in their psyche to retrofit them.
Safety loops do add resistance as there are 2 extra pairs of connectors in the circuit, or 3 pairs if you want your ESC easily removable with plugs rather than soldered in.
Extra wire depends on your definition, I run to Naviga rules in the UK which like Australia requires safety loops so I have them on all by boats (including my non-race sport boats, as once I experienced the convenience I wouldn't have it any other way), 7 boats currently running plus MANY more from years past (it was '97 when we introduced loops here), and on every boat so far I have less wire between the Battery and ESC than they came with (I chop significantly more off the ESC and battery leads than I put back in with the loop and pigtail), so in that way there is no extra wire. However even with the loop placed between the battery and ESC as it should ideally be, you still need to reach up to the deck from the ESC and battery, so you can not cut as much wire out as you could have running the wire directly, which in effect is extra wire.
