When you know it all.......you never will learn anything new
Back from the pond with some good news. Cutting the 2nd rudder was the ticket. It's alot less stable in turns, which I'm assuming it will need bigger turn fins now but it's running alot quicker top speed. It's still slightly wet to I put about 2* of positive adjustment on the strut and brought the trim tabs up a tiny bit but now its very very unstable even going straight. Jumping its own wake almost flips it. Once I figure out how to get thus thing to stick a turn it'll be golden.
With the stock prop, 1800kv and 3s I'm going to guess its doing high 20's maybe 30's. I'm going to look into a slightly higher kv to try and get more speed. Right now the motor and esc are just above water temp after 5mins. Somewhere around 2600kv is going to be the ticket
Good to hear,
I am using a 2600kv in mine on 3s with the x440/3 and gps today at 44 mph.
Bigger trim tabs and turn fin will help it a lot,
I made mine out of some old stock I had on hand.
Yeh I was very happy with the outcome. It was almost running too well. With the 1800 I could run 4s, the problem is how to shove 4s into this hull without moving my weight around.
I have nearly no torque roll, which is surprising.
Quick question, my 440 2 blade will be less prop right? Holding them side by side they look to be close in pitch. I may throw it back on to see if it makes a difference or not. I can't imagine the plastic stock prop is flexing any measurable amount under the little power I'm throwing at it.
Lenny can you link me to the motor you're running?
Hey,
tlandauer aka Tim is running the PB 1500kv motor in his Rio on 4s.
I helped him fit things in his hull a little better for lower cg,
Ask him to post some pictures of his setup.
I know they are in a post on hear some where,
If you put the cell side ways in the center you can move it forward some for better cg.
And have the esc and rx on the port side of the motor.
The x440 is a 2mm smaller than the stock prop and should not torque the hull as much at high speeds,
That is why I like the x440/3 even better on most of my mono.
I will be posting video's of Todays runs in a little bit.
Yes on the motor, Just need to find it.
Only problem is I don't know how to sharpen and balance props. I can fix one with a file, but I don't have the necessary equipment or experience to balance a prop. I PDF I find someone selling one I will surely pick it up.
I dnt want to throw a smaller prop on yet. The 42 has decent speeds with this motor on 3s. In all honesty I could probably prop up some since I'm making almost no heat.
Another thing I just thought about that I did was go to a smaller pickup. I threw a pickup from my villain on the rio. It's possible it was causing alot of drag, it was probably 1/2 inch below the transom. The stock pickup is still supplying a good amount of water and is alot sleeker.
That's a good idea. I'm thinking of ways to mount my phone to my tx that's all I have to take a video.
I thin ive got you beat on the messy work bench though lol. There's just a tiny piece of property on my table that is oddly the exact size and shape of my rio. Lol
Last I tried, I hit the tree and beached the Rio, separated the upper hull. ( all fixed)
I will just stick with the tx alone for now.
I am running 4s and yes, I am very happy with Lenny's suggestion to move the ESC on top of the motor. It made room for the batteries to move fore and aft to adjust COG easily.
Among all of you, I have the minimum alteration, because the Rio was my rescue boat, I left the brushed ESC intach and all the wires are merely tucked away! I can convert this thing back in 10 minutes. Anyway, the Rio is a good looking boat.
Have fun guys!
Do you have a link to pics? I'd really like to see how you did it.
Lenny posted the "before and after" in post #37. I even used the stock motor mount , I just had to slide the water jacket towards the back of the motor. I used electrical tape to increase the dia. of the motor can so the stock mount could "grab" the motor better. That 's it. You can see in the picture how the blue jacket is all the way to the back.
The way it is now is that with this set up, the stock motor mount only "grabs" partial motor. The front "ring" of the mount is not doing anything. I am sure Lenny is shaking his head!!!
But it works and the motor is very secure!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCSzhyfHF3w
Ok, I see. And that gave you a good cg? I tried a similar setup and was running rediculously wet. Ill have to try it again. My esc is mounted way in the back, because I removed my "waterproof" box.

may be mine is running a bit wet, but I NEVER had torque roll or chine walk, the boat was so stable, I really don't think mine was too wet, but as i say, I wanted to be able to revert to stock config. so I don't want to chop one rudder off. So all depends what you want out of the boat, I suppose.
