would removing the turn fins make the boat unstable? Would it increase the speed any?

Removing the turn fins will make the boat unstable in the turns. Never done it with the Impulse 31, but with other boats it has resulted in spinouts and very dirty turns etc etc. Can actually be a bit of fun, but yes, my bet is the turns will become unstable. Straight line speed might increase a very small amount but not much.

As I've posted before, if you really want to increase the stability of the IM31, these are the way to go:

The stock turn fins aren't sufficient once you really push her beyond stock speeds... These new fins from OSE are fantastic, and will really help to hold in the turns. They also stabilize the boat in the straights. I think there is a "lifting" effect from the stock fins in the straights when the boat starts any side to side roll, due to the shape of the fin surface. These upgrade fins don't do that...

      I would HIGHLY recommend these.
