need help with rescue boat/ convert traxxas blast to brushless for towing

    Hey guys,
I just aquired an old traxxas blast. The original one. It has no motor or esc but everything else is in it. I want to pop a cheap brushless setup in. But the boat going to be my rescue boat so nothing serious for speed. I just want something that will run cool. and I can remove the rescue gear and the kids can drive it. Maybe 15-20 mph.

    I'm thinking this esc...

hobbyking 30A boat esc 3a UBEC
3amp should be enough for servo and it has LVC

    This motor...
    http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html
2040SL 4800KV brushess inrunner with water jacket

and then just a small 2s lipo like 3000mah 20C

I can't find my calipers so I'm not sure what couplers I need or if the brushless motor will just mount to the coupler I have in the boat already. It has the stock plastic prop on it but will that keep my temps down?

the boat has no water pickup for watercooling so I was thinking of making a pickup tube that goes out past the prop so the prop forces the water into the jackets since it will be pulling a boat it may not be moving along fast enough for the pickups to just be on the hull.

Or is all of this just unneccasry and pickup a stock esc and motor that will fit in it.

any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

That is a 380 sized motor in a hull that can and should have a 540 sized motor. it is not a big boat but you need the grunt to move her especially if you want her to double duty as a rescue boat. If you make a rig out of PVC pipe, it takes quite a bit of oomph to push that contraption!
Your idea of a prop wash water pick up is good, but if I am correct, you need to affix that on your struder, because you have a steerable out drive .
You need water cooling! The original Blast was notorious for running hot, then with the newer hatch, Traxxas STILL didn't make water cooling until this very latest version, I don't have this boat but that is what /how I remembered.
    cheers!
Too many boats, not enough time...

I use the Traxxas Blast as my rescue-- everything is stock on it. I put an eyehook at the top of the transom and I tow the gaff from the proboat rescue duck on about 5 feet of fishing line-- the Blast has a steerable drive so you can turn it easily at slow speeds-- I drive the Blast around the stranded boat, the gaff snaggs it, and I tow it in. You can also tow a tennis ball instead of the gaff.

Note, when I bought the boat it did not have water cooling, but when I fried my motor, Traxxas sent me a new motor and a free water cooling unit for it.

Good call on the 540. Would have sucked tring to mount the 380. The pickup would be on the rudder so its always in the wash. My real issue is picking the right amp esc and kv motor. I'm trying to just stick with the stock prop to make replacement parts easy from the l

Is there an ez run system or anything I can pickup? Every post I see is for newer blasts and making them fast. I just want some grunt and cool temps.

I don't have the stock motor to send back to traxxas if they would take it. This boat has to be from the early 90's

I just found an old xl-5 esc in an old box of parts I had. Seems like people use them in blasts with some success. So if I use that I guess a brushed motor is the way to go. So no I just need to fugue out what motor to get and I saw a metal prop upgrade for the boat. Any recommendations on the motor? If I go this route do I need water cooling?

I got a traxxas villain ex for a rescue boat it has dual motors with dual steerable out drives turns on a dime has reverse and plenty of torque and speed for rescue and kids could just sell the blast on ebay for parts and get a villain for a $100 or a little less

Ok so I have the xl-5. It does have Lvd. A buddy just gave me a 12t from a stampede tgat was never used. I also got the water cooling kit and just ordered the 3/16 prop shaft upgrade. I'm thinking I will run a 7 cell battery from a summit in it. I can just remove the battery tray. So now I just help with prop size. I'm thinking just plastic since this is just a rescue boat. So I just need something that will give it some torque. Only other question is what should I do for the rescue apperatous? Tennis ball and some line or should I do a small push bar.

It will be rescuing a spartan, genesis and mini zippkit rigger.
