    O.S. OB flex cable length?

I am current converting a Top Speed 3, bought a new O.S. lower and using this Hyper Performance Conversion kit: http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...-eobckOS35-5mm.
I realized the length of the cable is anything but standardized. I have the original cable that is 130mm long, then I have several that I bought here used as an assortment of parts that measured at 137mm long. The Hyper Performance one is the shortest: 127mm.
At issue is the collet: as you see it has two set screws, in order for BOTH set screws to be utilized, the collet has to be placed close to the motor front plate, but the cable is too short, especially the Hyper Performance cable. For the collet to "catch" the square end , I will have to forego one set screw.
Anyone makes an up grade one that would allow the use of both set screws? The stock cable is terrible: the entire thing is out of round, and the square ends are not well articulated!

If I am using only one set screw , should I back out the other one or leave it on the collet?
    Using UL-1 motor, BTW. and
    Thanks!

    Tim,

This has cropped up before. Some of the motor adaptors were taller, placing the collet further away from the flex and preventing sufficient mating. SoCal FE Stephen ran into this and went to the Mfg. - Hyperperformance Products in Huntington Beach and got things straightened out. I had some really nice cables made by Kris Flynn {[email protected]}. He'll make them to your specs if you choose to go in that direction. I have a new 129mm cable by him and two different collets if that would help. The longer collet is in use on my tunnel.

      Thank you so much, Tony!
For now I placed the collet out and not using the first set screw. I need to measure the length of the cable more exactly. I didn't use the 137mm because upon close inspection I see some uneven winds . Where do you get the longer collet? I always like opposing set screws as compared to one sided ones. Is it from Hyper Performance? I think I will contact them, funny I didn't realize that on my VS1 which I took to the RCX.
It's great to know that Kris Flynn can make these per customer's spec.

        Tim,

I honestly have no recollection of where the longer collet came from. These days my memory is - Uh, what were we talking about ??

If you want, I can drill/tap an opposing set screw on your collet. Better to get the motor adaptor shortened or get a longer cable.

Thank you very much for your offer. I think I like to remedy this with the two methods suggested by you.
This is off topic, but would the opposite set screws balance out better than the "two on the same side"?---one question that always had me thinking.

probably in theory but depends on the magnitude of the weight differential between the material removed to make the threaded hole and the grub screw. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it

The first batch of collets that Hyperformance did for the FE coversions were too long. He corrected the problem and sent me a replacement but I did grind down the long one with a belt sander and I believe I'm still using it today. Kriss does build fine cables. I haven't head a failure in four years in two boats. I remember the stock OS cables were a couple mm too long plus the corners were not as sharp as Kriss's so the would spin in the collet.

I believe the proboat stiletto coupler is longer.

You know Tony, I think it might of been both. The motor adapter was short and I cut that down. And if memory serves, I might have had to trim the collet also. Maybe because I cut the adapter down a bit too much. It was about four years ago. Getting old sucks!! Thanks for refreshing my memory.

You are right, I only focused on the grub screws, another reason why I am mentally challenged!

I noticed the "not-so-square" ends of the O.S. stock cable.
Since I am new to this, I haven't realized earlier products were dimensioned a bit differently, it is great to know that so much collective efforts went into these parts!
