I am only guessing, but as the original intent of this motor was that it was designated to be used as a car motor in which the thrust on the rotor (motor shaft) is radial to the shaft, driving gears, the fore-aft fit of the rotor wasn't considered critical. In any event I always use an external thrust bearing with these motors.
I have a question regarding the extra long lead wires on the Castle/Neu motors. As you say - originally made for cars (E-Revo I think). Are those longer leads acceptable in a boat set up or should they be shortened to comparable lengths as seen in most boat motor applications? I'm only asking because I'm still learning as I go.

I currently run a Pursuit Mono w/4074 2000 kv and T-180. I was looking for a little more umph, and have an opportunity to buy a 1515-1Y with the longer leads.

Also on the Neu site they recommend a 1515-1Y for 27-30" and a 1521-1.5D on 30 to 34" for P-Mono. Any info on the leads and the comparison between the 1515 &1521 would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

The CC/Neu 1515 1Y 2200KV motor comes with long leads and out of the box has 6.5mm male connectors pre-installed. It's perfectly OK to shorten the wires and/or substitute whichever connectors work for you. Here's how I did a CC/Neu in a JetChopper 30 :

This motor should perk up your Pursuit a bunch.

The 1521 1.5D has a lower KV but more torque which will benefit a larger/heavier boat. I use one in my 9.5 pound wet Insane 34" mono for heat racing effortlessly spinning a 450/3 or 450/2. This would likely create unpleasant torque roll in the smaller/lighter Pursuit.

Thank you for your reply Properchopper. Your info will help me move forward with this project using the 1515. I'll need to bump up to 6.5 bullets on the esc and shorten those motor leads as discussed.

Really neat package on your jetchopper.

        Thanks again for your info.

Please note, all motors that have flexible wires coming out of the end bell have a solder joint on the winding coil, the hottest part of the motor and because of the lack of space in the end bell they will be small gauge (13 on a 1527 1y). This leads to the failure of solder joint on the winding and the lead falls out of the motor as you have read here on OSE. Mine came out at 170 amps, Steve Nue told me boats because of the amps we pull should have the winding wires extended out the end bell and the solder joint should not be above 150 amps. I am pulling 20 more amps on my extended windings with no problems just make sure you brace the plugs so they can not bounce around in the boat.

The motors with leads that are part of the windings can't/shouldn't be cut, it is extremely difficult to solder a cut lacquered wire even after efforts to remove the coating. Luckily these motors have relatively short extensions so there is no need to really shorten them, one can shortened the ones on the ESC to achieve the proper length.
CC specifically says " OK to shorten", I thought that was very thoughtful of them to point it out to customers.

I'm extremely happy with neu motors. Some serious wattage on these 1527's. The only reason I had the lead wire de-solder was from running back to back sessions and long passes-to much to long. I usually let things cool down between runs, that time I payed the price. and the wrap on neu motors is superior to others. (Maybe the new tp motors to match-Kevlar then carbon) I've been running one set of neu motors all summer long in a saw set up running 6k watts, 54k+ rpms! and keeping heat in check. I'm almost positive leopards would not have held up as long. I was planning on cooking a couple sets but to my surprise as long as heat has been in check I've been using same set. (With the recent de-soldering episode)

I just got my 1515 2200kv castle motor in today. The quality of these motors are impressive. I guess you get what you pay for. Waiting on my water jacket from ose and into miss geico it goes.
