    Lehner Motors

Lehner motors are expensive. Period. About double the cost of a comparable neu motor. What is the difference that makes for such a large price gap and is there such a superior performance in lehner motors that justifies the cost?

Lehners do not have "superior performance" over comparable Neu motors. They do have a higher level of finish and appearance, and they are available in far more Kv variants than Neu - making it easier to match the exact motor to the exact requirement. Their high price has a lot to do with the exchange rate of dollars versus euros - 1.34 dollars per euro at today's rate - and the high taxes imposed on Germans to pay off the debt of other EU nations. Also in the mix is the amount of material used in their construction. Neu motors of comparable power weigh a lot less due to differences in design.

So are the different kv options the only real advantage of lehners?

The opposite question, why are chinese made motors so much cheaper? Obviously cheaper labour and lower quality but also one factor as I understand it (I could be wrong!) is to do with the material the magnets are made of. My understanding is that it is rare earth materials and china has most of it, the export tarrifs to get raw materials out of china are quite high, but if the materials are manufactured in china to a finished product then they don't attract the same taxation.

There really is no advantage, Lehner are 2 pole motors and Neu's are 4 pole, Lehners are considered very high quality motors but in my opinion the Neus are more efficient than Lehners. Neu customer service is much better and I've never had a Neu Explode on me for NO reason. I have owned over 70 big format Lehners 22 and 30 series. I had 4 Lehners blow on me in setups that were dead on. I sent them back and 11 months later received 1 motor back and a note that said the other 3 were "user error" No explaination and didn't even send me MY blown motors back! Needless to say I stopped useing Lehners, and switced over to Neu's. I now own over 100 Neu motors and have had nothing but great success with them. I just sent 5 motors back to Neu for tune ups, 1 was completely blown they replaced that for no charge, and each other motor had new bearings, rebalanced, new insulation on wires and shipped for $120 and got them back in 2 weeks!!! Keep the duckets here in the USA, better product better customer service. In my opinion.

I got rid of all the Lehners, the last ones went over the winter, about a dozen or so, I have 1 2250/10 left thats it! I prob have 70-80 Neus now, I sold a few over the winter too. I'm a big fan of the 1527's and 1530's thats what I mostly have now plus a half dozen or so 2215's and 2230's

There are some differences between the two and it's hard to put an exact point on what makes them that much more expensive. Like Mike I own a wide variety of Neu, Castles and Lehners from the smallest to the largest each offers. Lehner's have always been pretty high quality and use a lot of copper and magnetic material which drives the basic cost up. Neu's use less copper and magnetic material for an equivalent power rating and hey are more efficient at rated power although less efficient at partial loads. The location of manufacture and the exchange rate also has a lot to do with it. Keep in mind Neu's are pretty expensive in Europe when they add on the 19% VAT tax.

The wide variety of winds Lehner offers is a huge plus. Neu could do the same, but it is probably a larger headache than they want to tackle.

What I do like is that Lehner has improved the quality of their motors over the years and failures are less likely with the newer designs. Without going into specifics I can't say the same for Neu's.
