    29" for sport/fun

    hi all,
I've been away from FE boat since few month and coming back with some ideas...
I was originaly thinking of a DeltaForce 33" to put my Feigao 8XL in, but realize this would require a pretty large budget and the 8XL would probably not the appropriate motor...
I'm not thinking of racing but just sport/fun fast (very if possible) running and considering a DeltaForce 29" instead of the 33", still want to use my 8XL with the cheap improved/moded 80amp Mystery (that I'm in love with ) but with 3S lipo's instead of 12x4000 Nimh to have the baby as light as possible!
Do you, as experts that you are, consider this as a reasonnable challenge?
    Any input are welcome!
    Emmanuel

Ed, I dont think 3S is gonna get you what you want. 4S2P is probably where ya need to be. I also dont believe but could be wrong that the Mystery is up to the task. Just my 2 cents. Good luck. Will
    Many issues!!!

I agree the Mystery is certainly not the best boy for the job but it holds very well believe me, my Eagle Tree did show 70 amp constant without any heat (home made watercooling mod) under 12 nimh cell, but I'm afraid using 4S will give too many rpm, 3S should give more than 20000 under load, now I agree that under 4S the Mystery won't do it for long!
As Reddy Watts says in his sticky thread "...reliable brushless..." I guess I have to stay below those 83amp for the 8XL and below 80amp for the ESC? don't want to burn everthing!!!

Ed, if you do not run the boat wet, it should be okay. 4S is also possible with a small prop. I originally ran my DF 29 on a baracuda 80...4s1P....X440....9XL.. Now use a Turnigy 100 HV

          Hi Ed
If you haven't already, check the data on page 6 under Data Logger info.
For your set up you probably would be better off with a 9XL, but the 8XL should be OK ( since you already have it ) with a 40mm prop, just watch the amps with your ESC as you don't have much of a safety margin.
          Graham.

Graham are you talking about this thread? http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...ta+Logger+info good infos in there!!!
The Triton is about the same size as the 29" how heavy is she?
I'm trying to compare with the moded cheap NQD Xcyclone where my 8XL was before, I was originaly running 12 nimh cell and the best I got was with a 42mm prop @ 76amp burst 66amp constant but the baby was heavy and my guess is that a 42mm prop @ almost 30000rpm is not very efficient on a 33" heavy hull?
I'll start with 3S2P 5200mah total witch is going to be more than 500g lighter than 12 Nimh cell!
Douggie how many amp was your setup pulling?
Hopefully I'll be doing the maiden run in two weeks, in the meantime, I'm going back to the workshop, a stinger is coming out of the minilathe rudder is ready, I'm trying to make the hardware as light as possible!

              Hi Ed
Yes that is the thread, sorry I should have made a link.
The Triton is 800mm in length but is quite light at 5.3kg all up with batteries etc installed.
Because of that length it handles rough water very well which suits me as our lake is exposed to wind so is usually rough.
It has recorded 74kph on gps with this set up which is plenty for a race boat, it would probably go faster with a bigger prop but I am not really interested in SAW speed.
If I was setting this boat up again I would probably use a 9XL, but like you I already had the 8XL so used that.
I have it set up quite loose with the c/g at 30% for normal use and can move the batteries forward if it gets too bumpy.
As I said, my concern with your set up would be the ESC running close to its maximum rating, but if you are sensible with props it should be fine.
The Data Logger is a great tool isn't it.
              Regards
              Graham.

                Graham,
are you sure she weight 5.3kg? sounds very heavy to me, my crappy Xcyclone was 3kg and I already found the baby looking more like a submarine!
and yes the Eagle Tree is THE tool to have!
                74Kph... knotch or Kilometers?

                  Hi Ed

Whooooops, all up weight is 2.35 KG, I got stuffed up converting lb to kg.
She would be lucky to float at 5.3 kg !!
Thats 74 kilometers per hour which is 45.9 mph.
Like you I have to think and talk in both metric and imperial which at times can be confusing.

AHAH! 2.35 is fair now I understand the difference with my 3kg Xcyclone that would have sank at 5kg !!!
we need to have Steve to put together a database where precious information like your setup witch is clearly described can be a reference, as many others, as it is for me!!!
                    thanks Graham

Ed, I was pulling up to 80 amps, dependant on prop choice and other factors. I was concerned with the barracuda 80. That is why I went with the Turnigy HV 100 esc.....a great esc for the money.

when I was trying to improve the speed of the Xcyclone I decided to go for 18cell with gear box and I've purchased a Hex120, the baby was awesome but the ESC catched on fire during the second run, probably due to an extented period at half throttle, I'm a little perplex regarding cheap ESC but I have had no concern with the Mystery up to now, mine was flooded and after a complete silicon waterproofing it is still working fine! I have two other 80A Mystery (as backup) that I got for 20$ each, they have different tones at startup and programming procedure is also different than the first one... you know what you pay but you never know what you'll get!!!
I might give a try to the Turnigy 100HV, I did hesitate when I ordered the second Hex120 because it's twice the price but at the end, considering that the first one smoked, I'd better have purchase the 100HV, 100$ in Euro is really affordable!
