McMaster Carr- 2.93 or 4.79 for 10 depending on the thickness. http://www.mcmaster.com/#95630A240 or http://www.mcmaster.com/#95630A445
Edit- just saw Joel's link. That works too :).My favorite search engine http://google.comComment

They aren't installed with any pressure on them so I don't see there being an issue except the thicker may absorb more should it be compressed? It will also possibly last longer. I'd have to measure some of the ones I have here to see what is typically supplied from various boat shops and manufacturers but I really don't see a problem either way as long as it is installed properly.
Edit- the shaft from my Pro Boat Miss Geico was nearby so I was able to measure it for you. That one is .058 and just eyeballing the others, they are about the same, so I'd say use the thicker one (first link). Cheaper anyway :). McMaster's shipping is a bit higher than most, but depending on what you order, it is more than worth it. Lots of industrial type materials are used in boats that you can get there- brass tubing, teflon liners, misc bearings, aluminum stock, CF stock, silicone tubing, epoxy, nuts, bolts, etc. Some if much cheaper than you'd find at typical hobby shops and such, others are a little pricey but if ordering a bunch at once, convenient :).My favorite search engine http://google.comComment

See, I used to not run them either on boats with a 1 piece shaft but was told it was a good idea "just in case" and have been using them (mostly) ever since. I do have one boat that has never had one on it and it has never been a problem though. My favorite search engine http://google.comComment

If the dog comes into contact through to small a gap between the strut & dog it matters not whether it contacts the strut or a washer you risk snapping the flex. Same applies if it comes into contact with either the amp draw increases also putting electonics at risk. This very subje4ct re tefon washers on 1 piece shafts has been disscused a number of times on this forum & most do not bother using them for the above reasons. The answer is to allways make sure you use an apropriate gap ie the gap should be the diameter of the flex being used.Comment

Gotcha. Makes sense and was always my thinking as well, but then I got harped on by another boater about not using it and how it was necessary, etc. and he gave me a few so I pretty much used them on most of my boats from that point on. I did notice a lot of RTR's I have seen have them though, so I figured they had to have a reason for it. Thanks for the info.My favorite search engine http://google.comComment

A lot of rtr boats use 2 piece shafts where the stub shaft is separate from the flex so you get no wind up (shortening of the flex) & the stub floats in the strut. With this system the dog runs against the teflon washer & only a small gap is used between the strut & dog, this system is a pain though when it comes to removing the flex for cleaning & greasing as you have to remove the entire strut to get the flex out, this is why most change out to a 1 piece shaft that simply pulls straight out.Comment

Sorry, should have clarified- I have seen RTR's with 1 piece shafts using them. As for the 2 piece shaft- my Pursuit has one and you are right, royal PITA removing the stinger after every use to clean and grease things! That's why I ordered a 1 piece from OSE today :). I was planning on replacing it when it broke, but it's about 4 1/2 years old now and still going lol.My favorite search engine http://google.comComment

You can get them at Kintec also. Towards the bottom of the page.

My LHS that carries RC Cars has a bunch of 3/16 plastic washers that I use between the drive dog and the strut. These washers are used on car axles. They might be plastic vs. teflon, not sure. I found ones with the perfect diameter and you can sand them down to make them thinner. I think they were Traxxas parts.

I have the one peice shaft from OSE. I was thinking that it wasnt needed. OSE doesnt even offer it when they suggest other parts to buy are on the bottom of the strut upgrade for my genesis. I still think I am going to put one on anyway just incase. Id rather not have metal on metal at 40,000 rpms!Comment
