alright guys I have a question and maybe you can help.I switched my Traxxas Spartan back to the original battery packs to let my boys play with it instead of being on lipo. after running about 5 maybe eight minutes I opened up the hall to pull the batteries out and they literally had fried the plastic around the batteries. I contacted Traxxas and they think that the boat has hey short somewhere in it. The boat runs perfectly fine and seems to not act up. But they would like me to send it back as they think it has a problem. Has anybody ever noticed this and do they think that that could be the cause. I sure hate this in my book back for two to three weeks and not have it to play with. When I run Inn on my other packs it has no problem.should I return it back to stock and ship it back to them for repair?

no its not stock you know that. What you think that that leopard motor that I'm running in it the 4082 1600kv could be causing the battery packs the heat up like that or do you think that me having your Octora 445 prop is causing ityou heat up and melt the batteries?

If I am correct---you moded your boat, I don't think the stock battery packs ( NiMh?) have enough discharge rate, they heat up due to the high amp draw and long run time. They can't supply the amp that your system is demanding. Remember, 5 - 8 min. on a boat is considered long. Lipos have a higher discharge rate and can handle this situation. How bad is it? if it is just the battery trays, I won't bother, but if the hull is warped, well, you get my drift...
Too many boats, not enough time...

yeah I figured that. No its just the batteries when I run my Lipo batteries I have no problem with them heating up that's kind of what I thought it was just wanted to check

wasnt sure if you had moded it yet.
no you should not send it back, because, im sure traxxas wouldnt have told you to send it in if they knew that you changed motor and other stuff. how is it their fault? tim is right, that motor requires way more amps than the stock nimh batteries can dish out (causing them to get really hot) and melting the hull. now you want to put the stock stuff back in it (which traxxas wont find anything wrong with)

I just found it odd that he said a resistor might be bad thinking it might have just been esc.I just want to make sure the esc was not bad.

the esc isnt designed to run that motor. any time you mod something like this, you take the chance. you should tell them the motor you have in there, then see what they say. you may have damaged the esc yourself. what made you think you could just plug another motor into it?

so say if I go home and I put the stock motor back in it and I run it and it does the same thing to the batteries then should I send it back in?because then it would mean that there is a problem because if its stock and just having a different prop that shouldn't make it do it am i correct? I think when I get home I'm going to put it back to stock and see if it does the same thing to the batteries. If it does with the stock batteries then do you think I should send it back?

yeah i mean try it out. if its running the esc is prolly ok. sounds to me like your problem is your trying to run a huge motor. of course the traxxas guy thinks there is something wrong with the esc, he doesnt know you stuck a huge motor in it with an x445 on that esc. bad move.

its like going to the dealership and buying a new camaro, then stuffing a huge motor in it, blowing the transmission, then calling the dealership and tell them the tranny is cooked without mentioning the motor swap, then putting the stock motor back in and bringing it back under false pretences.

it did the same thing to the batteries when it was stock I just didn't realize it until the other day when I put a new motor in it I noticed that the battery packs were melting the plastic. So I went ahead and put the new motor in and ran it with the factory batteries to see how it would do and it heated them up again but this time I really noticed it because even when I ran it stock with the stock set up the batteries got so hot I couldn't even hold them when I wa stock at that point all I had was a prop on it and a Boca bearing drive strut. So it was doing this even with the stock stuff in it.

i dunno man… i think the honest thing to do is explain to traxxas exactly what happened, then see if they still want to look at it.

I'm not trying to be dishonest by any means and i told the guy I had modified it but he said that should not have been a big deal and he would have one of their experts call me because i told him i would rather not send it in. I only ran it one time with the new motor and i told him that. So i will see I'm awaiting their call. I think if it's going to take awhile ill just order a new esc turnigy or something.

yeah i mean if you explained the situation to him and he still wants to look at it, then that choice is yours really…. i know you really dont want to send it back in considering youve got the boat bug now hehe…. its addicting
