Help me find a boat for my dad!

I just got into the hobby and already tore-slap-up addicted! My dad flies rc heli's but I want to get him a boat. I have a MG29 V2 looking to get him something maybe not quite as quick but something he won't get bored with. I know he likes cigarette-style boats (for lack of a better term). Something in the $250 range maybe?? Any good suggestions?

What kind of heli does your Dad fly? If he flies collective-pitch, or does 3-D flying, trust me, you don't want to get him a slow boat. Flying is three dimensional, he will be bored with an entry level boat in less than 5 minutes! lol...
Too many boats, not enough time...

I agree!!!! I flew collective pitch helis before I moved over to boats. And none of the rtr's that I have had, satisfied me. I had to rebuild them, and make them faster to keep my interest. And now I have a 41" cat that will run 70mph. And built a twin motor 56" mono, that may run 70-80mph. The mono's at paint.

I would let him run your MG and see if he likes it.

What batteries does he already have for the helis? Makes more sense to get/build something he can use the same packs in.
Would speed or stability be more important to him? Some smaller mono hulls are self righting and I think you can find them for about 250$ or less? Not sure about the prices, we don't run anything like that around here so I've never looked.
Lots of options out there, a bit more info and somebody will have a good suggestion.
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

I feel like he would enjoy something fast that also handles really really well. I think the motley crew would be a wise choice. Handles extremely well and with a few small upgrades you'll be hitting 60mph!. Fast is good but its great to run laps and stuff too theres more "sport," to running then I think. Anyway good luck.

Well, first off only one of his heli's are "hobby grade". He has a stunt chopper that he is just learning to fly. The rest are Chinese off brands that he can crash and not really worry about. We are just getting into RC'ing (he with the helis and me with the boats). I personally don't care for aircraft I really have always wanted a boat. He does like the boats, but has no intention of getting one. It would be more of a surprise to him so we could run together. I want to get him a mono-style hull (think Miami Vice) so we have differing boats. His would be just for fun.....I plan to race the MG eventually after a lengthy period of figuring out the boat and hobby. We went to a LHS today and were looking at a Revolt and a Spartan. Revolt was pretty sweet. Think he really liked it. Just looking to find him something pretty fast, no upgrades that he can zoom around with me and not be TOO embarrassed by my MG. Found several good deals on Revolt, looking like I will go with that. Besides, what dad could be unhappy if his son brought him a sweet RC boat just for the hell of it? Thanks for your thoughts, guys!

Revolt will make a great first boat. Good luck with it and as you've seen a whole area of the forum is dedicated to this boat.

Impulse 31 $250 RTR. If he likes the scale look, a good starter boat would be a Formula Fastech.

The revolt is a good boat. I prefer it over a spartan mainly because spartan is plastic. Revolt is fiberglass. Anyways the revolt will keep up with your mg

                        Hi,
There is a nice 23" boat in swap shop right now that will eat the MG29 up I think.
                        Take a look at it,
                        Neu motor to.

Ha ha, you're funny!......No, seriously he thinks the MG is gonna be TOO FAST! I was about to have a stroke laughing when he told me that. He's 62 y.o. so he has been out of RC'ing for a LONG time. He used to fly planes back in the 70's (control line, gas eng.) so I was like "dude, you flew planes, how could you think a 40-50 mph boat is too fast?" He cracks me up now that he's older lol. I think he's going to get a huge kick out of a stock Revolt, plus on the other hand we can kinda swap back and forth and drive each other's boats.

If pop likes cigarett type boats than mono haul might be a good start. I know the spartan is plastic but that boat is quick on 6s. I assume your running your MG in 4s which will slow down the spartan a bit yet still have room to grow without upgrading it and you guys can share packs. I know it's a bit out of the price range but I've seen some on eBay around 300. Just a thought, but might be a good one tho
