I changed the timing in my impulse 31 from soft to hard. I wanted to see if there was much of a speed difference. I only ran it for about 3 minutes pretty much full out just to check the temps. Batteries, motor and esc were all cool but I did notice that the pots were a little warm on the esc. I never noticed if they were warm when the motor was set to soft timing. How hot is too hot for these things

Pot, Are you talking about the capacitors ?
If so there should be a number on them like 105*C tops.Comment

Another question. How important is balancing and sharpening the prop. I have the stock prop on my impulse 31. I never did anything to it. I'm thinking about getting a m445 prop for it. Seems like everybody likes those for this boat with the stock set up. I'm just doing runs on my pond so not racing it or anything. $15 for the prop and $25 to sharpen/balance is a little out of my budget...lolComment

Very important to have good S & B props.Comment

if you cant afford to buy one s/b and dont know how to diy, then dont bother buying one. as lenny said its super imporatant. an out of balance prop will reek havoc on your drive hardware and cableComment

The Graupner carbon fibre props that Steve sells are pretty good if you aren't going to bother with sharpening & balancing props.
Or the CNC aluminium range. They both only need a slight tickle along the leading edge to sharpen them up a bit.See the danger. THEN DO IT ANYWAY!!!
