esc and battery sparking when connecting

    hi all

i am having problems when connecting my 2 ESC's to my batteries i get a large spark when connecting them , i do know there will be some sort of sparkage but this seems to much to me , is there a way of getting rid of this or connecting something to take a bit of it away.
i do not want a surge of power when connecting and i am afraid of shorting anything.

    running

    2 x turnigy 180amp marine ESC's
    2 x 6s lipo 22.2v turnigy 5000mah
    2 x leo 1600kv motors

is it possible to connect a on off switch to this and how would i go about doing this.

    thanks

Don't be a girl. A good spark is normal, and it actually is your friend. It lets you know that your caps are in good shape. If you don't get a spark it may mean that your caps are shot and a blown ESC is not far away. You are not damaging anything in your electronics with the spark. If you are not careful when connecting you can eventually erode one set of plugs and require replacement occasionally - but that's a small price to pay for the peace of mind that the caps are still good.

If you can't man-up enough*, there are anti-spark devices available.

Some folks rig up an anti spark device which is a wire with a resistor on it-- you connect that wire first between the lipo and the ESC which reduces the current, charges up the caps, then finish connecting the mains. I can't find the design offhand but maybe somebody will post it soon...

I think people who are rigging up really high voltage configs do this, ie, 10S... that can be a big spark. Like Fluid said, I would not worry about it at the 22V level.

Search for "anti spark" and you'll get a bunch of ideas. I do it this way, touch the resistor lead then plug it in.

            i have another question

is the only way of connecting the esc's to the batteries one at a time or is there another way of connecting them up so they get power at the same time, keeping in mind 2 esc's and 2 batteries so in other words 1 connection for 2 batteries and 2 esc's

this is the first time i am running double motors and esc's and batteries in a boat

            thanks

              I made this using 5.5 bullets ...

              Spark.jpg

Just plug it in for a few seconds then remove it and plug in your batts as normal.

Easy and works well, plus I use the same one for all my boats.

Hi mate a quick search on anti spark connectors found this. I was reading this & another thread that tells you step by step on how to do it .
