    Collet Problems

I am setting up my first large(Backlash) hydro and it has a 1/4" inch drive shaft. I measured the shaft with my calipers and it came out at .248, so it is about would I would expect. My problem is the collet I purchased will not slip over the shaft. It is an Octura collet and it is for this size shaft, but it will not slide over the shaft. I even did a bit a lite grinding on the shaft and the collet, but no luck. Odd.

Could some recommend a different collet that would be more likely to work. Thanks.

LOL, Heck I had the collet off and was driving a punch through it trying to widen the metal tongs out. The best I could do is get it about 1/8 of an inch on. Will try some other collets as suggested by others.

could try centering phillips head driver in center of collet and tapping to make hole bigger,i had to do that for my genesis with proboat collet.just make sure the nut still will fit over it.

Never heard of an Octura 1/4 collet always asked them to make them for the gas boats but they said no. Where did you get a 1/4 collet from Octura???

At about 75mph and 35,000 rpm with a 648 prop she will not hold on .....long before 45000 and 100mph is reached. Makes a bizar noise. I am going to have to put a set screw in it to make it hold. A little disapointed.

Ok. I thinkk the collet is ok and holding. The noise seems to be the ESC getting out of sink and making the motor make some strange sounds. I thought it was the collet because when I took it off it had a lot of aluminum shavings inside but it must have come from their machining procces and was never cleaned out

Do you solder the last inch of the flex shaft solid? No collet will get a good grip if you don't coat the whole thing with solder then sand/scuff it up a bit. I have used crappy collets and have had really good luck in the past t hey always came loose without solder. I have aeromarine they grip very well but its a pain to pull the flex out of the collet after use though.
