How to rebuild a motor that has been sunk a few times?

The leopard on my spartan has been under water more than 6 times. Crazy it still runs but makes a bad sound. When I pulled it apart its very rusted around the copper wires in the case. I tried a soft brush but no luck.

I'm really fairly new to the electric stuff and have no clue how to resolve this. I didn't want to spray anything in there simply because I don't know if it would harm anything.

I did a few searches but I think it kept pulling the word build out of rebuild and motor rebuild so I got tons of results of building boats.

I also searched the google but got results on how to replace bearings and such but nothing in the rust concern I have.

Would it be easier to just buy a new motor?

I would think you need to replace the bearings for sure - I sunk my stock spartan motor and had to replace the bearings, not hard really. Do you oil the bearings regularly?

As above WD40 and Corrosion-X plus new bearings.

Do you tape your spartan hatch? I started to after the first time I flipped mine and the hatch came off. I also reinforced my hatch so it won't pull out on a flip, it works quite well.
