    Lipo's in a Balloon???

With all this talk of not getting lipo batteries wet... is there any reason you couldn't just put them in a balloon like the receiver? Provided you can get them to fit, of course. Any reason you couldn't / shouldn't do that?

Coming from a guy that has had mine get wet... my suggestion is to NOT let them get wet. It was discussed once before and if your just getting spash/spray say from a drive line then get that solved. If your boat takes on alot of water, get that solved. I know it seems easier to say than do but once you do you gain much more confidence in your boat in the aspect that all that money is that much safer.

Yeah, I already try to do that and the last couple of times I've run mine it has been bone dry inside. I was thinking more so for those times when "$**t happens" and you end up with some water in your boat.

I have had mine get wet once and haven't seen any problems. What are the cons of them getting wet?

Yea I would agree that it's very bad. Ha Ha. If your batteries are sealed what's the best way to check?

There are threads on this problem i believe on this site and others. Do a search.
Plus you must have electrical knowledge to insure your safety and others. Your battery may already be toast and should be disposed of in a responsible manner.

I seal mine with clear silicon and they are fine. The 2 Hydros I have, due to the configuration of the hulls, force me to have the LiPos exposed to the elements. Thats why I seal them. I have had some under water for 30 minutes at a time and they stay nice and dry!I also seal the solder ends of the Deans connectors as well with silicone and then put heatshrink over top.

You are right on that point, I've seen first hand the destruction that occurs when LiPos go bad. Scary

Doby... care to elaborate and/or show some pictures of what you do to seal them?

                        Thanks!

Good old Home Depot clear GE silicone, I use a hard bristle paint brush, like an epoxy brush and seal the ends, overlapping the heatshrink by about 1/4".

Make sure to get in between the balancing wire and power leads.

I'll take some shots on Sunday and post them, my camera is at the girlfriends.

No one answered about the use of balloons so I will. I have used them for Lipos in Seaplanes and there is no problem. I just take them out to charge them.

Getting them in can be a hard so you can either cut off the neck(not my choice) and they will slide in. Or you can Blow up the balloon and push it in from the opposite end to the neck.

You can also use a condom(new preferred, and not lamb skin). not a joke-the lambskin part.

As far as Silicone caulks I would stay away from them. They contain acetic acid and acid and metal tabs don't mix well. If you go this route It is safe to use Oxygen Sensor Safe silicon which is sold in auto parts stores. I use it often on electronics. Or you can use Dow Corning 3145 RTV It's the bomb. Not cheap, but it's good stuff. I've used it for years to pot electronics that have an 'affinity for moisture.

Hope this was of some help, everyone on here has given me oodles of help so far and I'm sure more as I start my project this weekend.
