I also run 1/4 stuffing with .187 cable (no liner) on several boats, no water issues. I recently had a boat that came with a liner melt on me... now I get to rip out the entire stuffing tube to fix it... it was a very old boat, and I suspect the liner started to wear, then bind, then melted... (it was a mild setup).

If you happend to have .150 cables around, then you can use the liner in the 1/4 stuffing tube and that will fit-- so I really like the 1/4 stuffing tube-- gives you the option to use either .150 or.187 cables...

I have boats with both, prefer the ones without, just one less thing to have to perform maintenance on, not a big deal to replace the liner regularly but it's just easier to run without. I don't think there is any performance gain or loss for my type of running. Don't have water problems with any of my stuffing tubes.
If I build it - then no liner, if I buy a boat with one I won't rip out the drive line to change it over.
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?
