Z400 I assume the Forerunner 201 will measure top speed and hold it or is it an average? It appears to also have run time. I'm looking for something that will tell top speed as I have no clue on how fast these boats are or the difference between setups: props, batts, trim. Thanks
its will show topspeed and distance, but running time is not correct, its will count your time when you press "start" then tape the hull, bring it into water and run, pickup your boat, untape it and press "stop" button.....etc, and its not just your running time.
If you also need a timer my Futaba 3pm has a timer that starts when the trigger is pressed,
Also in my line of work Surveying, GPS's are a great option but not difinative, as the GPS's no matter what the manual tells you it a has a refresh rate of, it can be as long as 1.5 - 2 sec, and also the moment there is a sudden elevation change ( IE flip or cartwheel) the speed will register both in the X and Y parameter giving a slighty higher reading, which is why you'll allways read posts of, "I got my top speed ever today, right before i blew over"
But i myself use the etrek, very usefull tool for playing with props and what not.
...And no "start" and "stop" thing right, which i alway forgot
yup too many buttons to remember and push...I guess if you use it every day you will be fine but I found it harder to use than the gecko..for me anyway

The forerunners will fit in smaller boats and not effect the boats performance as much. I don't think it's any harder to use than a digital alarm clock ... or are you late for work a lot?
