I have a question regarding gluing a motor mount. Once you have determined the position of the mount and have the proper alignment, do you tac it in place and then glue around the mount? Or should I put the glue (JB Weld) down and then position the mount?

I tack it down in two corners with a dot of epoxy before putting down the JB Weld. This way it dont move, period.42" Osprey, 32" Pursuit, 26" Bling Rocket (rescue), Blizzard Rigger, JAE 21FE rigger, Hobby King rigger (RIP) -

To tell you the truth, when using those mounts, I usually put the epoxy on both surfaces. This way the JB has as much contact area as possible. I determine where I want the mount to go and mask a 3/16 edge around the mounting area with masking tape. Then I lightly sand anything that will be in contact with the JB using 200 grit and wipe down with alcohol. I will then smear the JB wild on the hull and lower 1/4 inch of the mounts and install. This type if mount shouldnt slide around too much but put a little weight on it if possible and check it after an hour. If all looks good, slowly remover the masking tape. Do one last alignment check and let it sit over night. You'll have a strong bond with nice clean edges.Attached FilesMike Chirillo

Chilli's right, the epoxy needs to be in full contact with every surface for the best adhesion. You can't depend on the epoxy to 'wick' under the mount, if you do you end up with a weaker bond. On hulls that I know will get a beating - SAW racing for example - I will glue a piece of fiberglass tape along one side connecting the mount and hull, using epoxy to saturate the cloth. This adds additional strength and keeps the mount from tearing loose in a high speed flip.

Sand/clean. Align. Trace with pencil. Apply epoxy to both surfaces. Align. When set, apply glass tape. JB Weld won't let you see your marks (not dissing JB, it will do the job, but doesn't look as nice, IMO).Legend 36 sailboat, KMB Powerjet Ed Hardy Viper, ABC jet pwrd BBY Oval Master, ABC Hobby Jetski, NQD Tear Into's, HK Discovery 500, MickieBeez pwrd Jet Rigger!, Davette/Gravtix jet sprint, KMB Powerjet Pursuit, NQD pwrd Jet Catamaran!,Steam pwrd African Queen, Sidewinder airboat, Graupner Eco PowerComment

I like to epoxy a couple of lengths of 1/4 or 5/16 carbon fiber tube to the sides & floor, Extending past the mount then add a bit of glass cloth over them This not only strengthens the bond of the mount to the hull but also removes a lot of the bending & flexing of the floor under load as the torsional forces are spread out over a larger area. Also works well in V hulls too if you are not using rails. See the pics.See the danger. THEN DO IT ANYWAY!!!

This is what I use to do: glue 30min to fix the mount, then apply roving fiberglass to both sides to create a smooth transition before laminate a 1" fiber tape.GillAttached FilesGO FAST AND TURN RIGHT !
