    Cutting carbon for transom

Im about to start work on my Osprey and have a unique situation Ive never been in. I want to put carbon/kevlar on the transom.

Now when I normally add the cloth I cut oversize and it goes up the vertical sides of the hull and up beyond the hatch areas so my cuts arent seen.

With putting it on the transom my cuts are in the spotlight. I heard about putting tape down then cutting on the marked lines on the tap.e However when I pull the tape off it rips it to hell? What gives?

What I do is put the tape on, cut it, and leave the tape on and put that tape side down. Nice and clean.

For carbon/cevlar better get some good scissors, that thing is horror to cut and sand.

Imho I would not try to make it as you are planning it that the cuts are in the visible area. Or maybe choose another weave?

        regards,
        Manuel

Before i put it in i leave it for 30'-40'.This way i don't have rips.

Easy, put it on the inside of the hull.

Im lost on the last two posts.

I plan on putting the CF inside the transom to cover the wood. The tape on the outter edges bother me, since the bond of the tape to the cloth is all the hold right there...

Any other tips/secrets or is that it?

Wheres Keith Bradley? His work looks very tidy, Im sure hes got a tip he could share :)

                  Wow OCD much?
Let's say you have 1/8 of tape on the edges, do you really think it matters once you've Layed it down and saturated everything with epoxy?
                  Oh well good luck

I just did the transom on a mono. I left an 1/8'' of tape face down. After it dried I went over the edges again with a light coat also.
If you don't want to use tape, you could sew the edges....

OK so you cut the other edge of the tape also. That does help a bit in knowing the process. I just seen myself using 2" masking and having varying thickness of tape due to eyeballing the layout of the transom.

Firstly, use scotch tape. Second, make a template out of poster board or cardboard etc...

                          That looks really good.

Thank for all the tips guys. I was just searching for info about this topic. I like the 1/8" of tape idea and will be using that on my DF 35.

I followed the advice and its shaping up quite well.

I made the pattern out of a manilla file folder. I then put it on the cloth weighted in the center. Lifted a straight edge and pulled a length of tape and eye balled its as thin as reasonable- around 1/8". Black sharpie around the pattern onto the scotch tape and cut her out.

I know it was mentioned about good scissors. I use the $2 ones from Harbor Freight. These things cut tin cans and real small sheet metal (shims in the machine shop). For $2 when dull pitch and replace.
