help needed and lot of it please 40" v hull i believe

hi this is my first post on the forum been searching for answers for a few hours no and dont seem to find what im looking for

anyway i got a few boats that used to be my grandads most are nitro racing boats and we are struggling to find any where to use them in our area south east kent uk

in the selection of boats i have found a unbuilt hull and i would like to build it with brushless in it so i can use at local park

I need some help as never done anything like this been into rc cars for ages but thats a tad different

i need to find out what length propshaft i need as it comes out the bottom of boat unless u can think of a better idea

i will add some pics to show you

also what size motor would i need to make this fast its a 40" v hull i think im sure u will correct me from the pics

thnks for your help in advance

Hi mate. Youll find all the help you need right here. That almost looks like a set of plugs you have there. plugs are the original patterns/shapes used to make a mould for fiberglass boats. the large "flanges" around the deck shearline are what makes me think this. I could be wrong tho. if these are a moulded part, the flange should be trimmed or removed carefully, then to join the deck and hull togeather, tape the deck on with masking tape and glass right around the inside of the join. when its all cured take your tape off. and start fitting her out. Or... you could trim flanges back leaving 3-4mm around the whole boat, glue and glass the halves togeather, then find a piece of rubber "PINCH GRIP" to fit over the 3-4mm flange to give you a decent finish. The first method would involve more refinishing work but would look much cleaner and would be much more aerodynamic. I cant help you much wth power systems, others here can easily help you out with that. Best of luck. thats a cool score!
    Im confused..... no...wait...mabee im not?

cheers richie im quite confident i can get it all together looking ok but its the shaft sizes ect i cant find any info on this subject

the hull its self is probably about 30 yrs old my granddad used to build them for racing so its more that it used to belong to him hence i want to build it instead of buying one

i was thinking of making a mould out of it to reproduce but dout there be much call for them tbh i used to work as a fibreglasser so could make them super strong and super light

How much do you want to spend? That's the biggest question before people can begin to offer advice.
Most boats now are set up with a surface drive, the shaft exits the transom not the bottom.
You buy the flex cable and cut it to the length you need. Depending you go with 1/4 or 3/16, what you power it with will decide that, and budget decides the power!
Where to mount the motor kind of depends on the size of the motor and batteries, you want the whole thing to balance 30% forwards from the transom.
I usually mount my hardware on the back of the boat, then move the batteries and motor around until I get the CG where I want it, make up the shaft to suit the location.
A boat that size I would be looking at a high voltage setup, meaning more than 6s lipo batteries, no experience with HV setups so I'm not the one to offer advice on a power system. All my boats are P or P-Spec class, meaning 4s batteries and in the spec class you are limited to a couple of motor choices.
You might want to make a new hatch for it that is more electric friendly, you will be using tape to seal the hatch to the deck to keep out ALL THE WATER! That one is cut to make room for the pipe on a nitro setup, they use a sealed box to keep the radio dry. A full length hatch will be much easier to seal.
Looks like a fun old school project, I'd love to do an electric version of my 7.5 cc nitro race boat I had back in the 80's, need to find a hull!
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

cheers m8 im not sure on budget tbh and deffo want lipo and brushless for ive seen a few bits i think would work on hobbyking but again i dont know if there any good

i think a m5 shaft would be best from what i read so far

as for the large hatch on top i was goin to put it on some hinges and tape it up then with the rear one perspex and seal with radio in a box ?? and any good

like i said i would just buy one but would like to build this

Another quick thought, i think this may be an "eco class" boat. I know they are raced by english clubs, Ecos had shaft and rudder coming out the bottom of the hull in about the same position as the existing holes. Was your grandad a member of a club? If so mabee someone there knows more about this boat? Best of luck mate..make sure to post up some pics or vid when youre done. :-)
